Comments about Studio Designs Ultima Fold-A-Way Table:
This table was a major disappointment from the get go. It came out of the box a bit banged up but not enough to warrant a return. The set-up was super difficult. Poor instructions and it required drilling with a power too to get things in the right places. Thank goodness for my husband. Now that it is put together it is difficult to set up as the legs don't lock into place. I bought this as a photographer's table that I need to fold up and store away in between shoots. Once it is in place it is sturdy enough, but it's heavy and large and does not store well. If you are looking for a bargain and know how to operate a power tool, then you may like this. If you are not handy and need something easy to fold and to store away regularly, do not buy this table.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Quality control an issue
By Retired Dilbert

I am a retired engineer who needs to make drawings for various home remodel and handy-man projects. Easy and compact fold-up of a drawing table is a must. I also desired a minimum level height of 30 inches for an occasional desk extension when sorting paper.PLUS: *It is attractive enough for a home den. *It folds and has the potential to be small enough for closet storage or behind a door. (See weld issue)*While not as steady as a rigid, heavy, wooden item, it is steady enough for occasional pencil work--particularly if lowered beyond defective welds. (see weld issue) It is NOT steady enough for ink drawing, irreversible work such as water color, or instrument repair--it's a fold-up, light-weight table, after all.MINUS: *Is not designed to lower to the claimed 30 inch minimum in the description of the desk/lamp/chair set. 33 inches is about the design limit--which I guess I could live with if only it would indeed lower to that.* WELD ISSUE: The particular unit shipped to me had welding external on the lower legs that penetrated inside to prevent the upper legs from sliding inside properly. Three out of four welds suggest a significant quality control problem. I steered away from the Alvin tables because reviews cited sloppy welding that interfered with function. Alas, Studio Designs also has problems.I was in a hurry for a drawing set-up as I wish to begin work on a major living room remodel immediately, lay out a new driveway immediately.... I obtained a table locally that isn't nearly so suitable. While my initial return request to Dick Blick somehow fell through the cracks, I received a response within hours on the second request--award them a B on time, an A on remedy. I cannot hold Blick responsible for indifferent Chinese manufacture absent proper inspection--that's Studio Designs, and apparently Alvin, as well as numerous vendors who use cheap Chinese labor and deliver dreck to the customer. If internet mail order is to work properly, vendors need to pay close attention to sending an acceptable item the first time (which Studio Designs did not)and to be responsive to the customer when problems do arise (which Dick Blick was.)
Merchant response: Blick attempts to send out every order free from damage or defect. However, these types of issues do arise occasionally. We apologize for this. Customers who receive damaged or defective items should contact our Customer Service department via email or by calling (800) 723-2787 and we will work with you to rectify the situation.

An easy solution that is cost effective.

For the price, this drawing table is a great value for needing a table that I can fold up and store flat against my studio wall. You need a good skill level to put it together, since there are no holes pre-drilled for attaching the hardware to the table top since you choose either a white top or a black top. I suggest having an awl and hammer on hand. I am satisfied with my purchase. A little hard to raise or change the levels of the tilt, if you plan on adjusting it at different angles.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Very pleased so far
I've mainly used this table for setting up my lightbox for product photos and as a workspace for creating jewelry designs. I am very happy with the height and quality of the table, and love the fact that I can fold it up and move it out of the way when necessary. When I received the table, the top had been damaged during shipping; I contacted the manufacturer, who immediately sent out a replacement top. I couldn't be happier with their service. The only minor item that I'm not 100% happy with is the height of the shelf compared to the top of the table when at its full height - I'd prefer to not have to stoop to grab things off the shelf.
