Comments about Strathmore Softcover 500 Series Mixed Media Art Journal:
I thought the competitive product was great but the quality of the paper (500 series) is outstanding - even though the other says it too is 140 lb. and for wet surfaces it does not come close to this paper.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Mediocre as can be
from Columbus, OH
Rated for mixed-media with a vellum finish: doesn't play well with ink, light watercolor, markers, color pencils, or graphite. Everything (except for Prismacolor liners so far) becomes a schmeary mess before you're done working. If you want a good mixed-media sketchbook, go with Canson or a Strathmore "Visual Journal".The binding IS very nice and surprisingly sturdy, I will say that.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

A Nice Size to Carry Around
By Cozy Knitter
from Tontitown, AR
I was looking for a small journal to take along with me to sketch outside or when I see something away from home. This is a perfect size. The paper is quality and works well with inks and watercolors. I also use watercolor pencils. It is also lightweight so does not add weight to my pack.

My granddaughter uses the book for her sketching. They are made very well and the paper texture is perfect for a variety of materials to be used on it.

The only sketchbook I will ever buy again!
By dabbling a bit
from Sacramento, CA
I love the size of this sketchbook and when it is open it will lay flat on the art table. The pages are thick enough to handle water-based paint and smooth enough to support ink line drawings.
Beautiful paper for watercolors, pencil and ink. Vellum surface has just the right amount of tooth, and i LOVE the off-white color.
Will buy it again and again!

Accepts all media and quite a bit of abuse with rubbing, erasing, too much water, etc. It recovers its shape and looks like new in the morning.
Very fine travel sketchbook
from Georgetown, Tx
This mixed media journal is ideal for pencil, ink and watercolor. The paper is 90# and has a soft smooth paper that works well with wet media. I use this 8"x 5.5" size as my go to size while Urban Sketching and on my travels. What I like is that it opens flat and it is the right size for my scanner. It would be nice if it came with a bright white paper but that is not too important to me.

The longer I use it,the better I like it
from Bellevue, WA
This has become my favorite mixed media paper/journal. I wish it came in a spiral bound format, and maybe a whiter paper version, but otherwise, I love it. Every time I use it alongside the Canson XL Mixed Media paper, I remind myself how really disappointing the Canson is. (The Canson's only advantage is the sturdy cover and the spiral binding. I use those features for heavy-duty tape-ins of metal work samples.) This Strathmore paper doesn't pile easily, and is far, far superior with watercolors and other water based media. The colors stay brilliant on this Strathmore 500 mixed media paper.
