Strathmore's Hardbound Art Journals offer artists more choices in a hardbound format, such as toned sketch paper, Smyth-sewn binding that allows the books to lay flat when open, and a lightly textured, matte, chocolate brown cover.
Available in two sizes, these journals contain 128 pages of 80 lb (118 gsm) 400 Series sketch paper in Warm Tan or Cool Gray, ideal for light and dark media. Pair them with graphite, chalk, charcoal, sketching sticks, markers, china markers, colored pencils, pens, and white gel pens. The 100% recycled paper contains 30% post-consumer fiber, acid-free.

Love Strathmore and Blick, but the corners were bashed in
By The thInker

Comments about Strathmore Hardbound Toned Sketch Journal:
I've been searching for a toned hardbound sketchbook for a long time and was very glad to see this available. The store I frequent seems to only carry the softcover version, which while nice, doesn't open as flat as I would like for a softcover. So I ventured online to purchase it from Blick. This is the first time I've bought from Blick online. I was pretty impressed that my paper got to me mostly undamaged (just a nick here or there), but the sketchbook has two corners slightly bashed in. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so others would probably find this ok, but given that my old sketchbooks all still have their sharp corners, these crinkled ones make me a little sad. The quality of the sketchbook generally is very nice - the cover has a nice matte texture to it. The one problem about it is that the sketchbook doesn't open flat. I don't know if this is because I need to use it more and break it in, but it's definitely a lot stiffer than I had expected.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The book you carry to show off your best
By Kent aspiring designer
The tooth in the book lets my pen and marker work look gorgeous, doesn't resist too much. The cover is solid doesn't crease much when I fold it back. Wish there were more pages so I wouldn't have to keep buying replacements after filling it up.
Not much tooth to the paper

Good quality sketch book. I just didnt think the pages would be so smooth.
Worked for Me

Works just as well as a white paper sketchbook, but I personally like how it alters the colors on my markers. It's not heavy enough to stop the bleeding, but that doesn't stop me. Otherwise, it satisfies my needs and it's a nice size (8.5x11) to carry around and still get a lot of images onto one page.

A wonderful option.

The toned sheets are a dream to work with. It helps you work a standard mid tone. The tooth is very smooth, so this really helps when you are subtracting (erasing) for hi lights and mid tone detail. Be careful not to over work the paper as it isn't as thick as most sketching sheets.I personally have a slight preference for the Grey tone as opposed to the Tan, but everyone is free to make their personal choice.

This is the second time I've bought this

One of the classes I'm taking to get my art degree requires that we do a project; mine is creating story books. This is the perfect sketch journal to bring the worlds I create alive in. It looks professional, the pages don't tear easily and you really have to wear the binding down to get it to mess up. It's a great buy.

I used to bind my own toned paper books, because I couldn't find anything other than the usual whites and creams in commercially made books. It was always a bit frustrating, though, because either I could use a paper that flexed well in sewn bindings (good) but had a laid finish (not so good for me), or I could use papers like Stonehenge that had a smooth surface (lovely) but were brittle and cracked when sewn into signatures. Or a colored paper that flexed well (like Rives BFK) but had an almost furry soft finish that kept catching my pens and didn't keep sharp lines clean. OR, I could use kraft paper which would yellow and disintegrate after a few years.I was delighted when I saw Strathmore's new toned paper sketchbooks last year -- I love the vellum finish the slight variation of colored fibers in the tan paper. I've used both the tan and grey books heavily, and I am delighted with their performance. I use mostly dry media (graphite, colored pencils, conte, chalk). I did experiment with putting down layers of a clear gritty gesso that allowed me to use pastel pencils easily on the neutral backgrounds. (Still need a fixative afterwards). I also played around with gouache and ink washes highlighted with white chalk. The paper handled light washes with no problem. Thicker layers of paint caused a bit of crinkling, but was still well-behaved. The bindings are sturdy and open pretty flat even in the middle of the book. They're just great sketchbooks, and I always have one with me now.

Great journal, awesome versatility

My mom got me one of these journals a few years back, and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world! While it doesn't hold up to too much erasing very well (really my only gripe about it) it's a great thing to have when you're doing a lot of traveling and still want to do art. I'm getting myself another journal for Christmas this year. I could not pass up the opportunity! The toned paper is a nice change of pace from plain white that I usually use for all my works, and it's great for experimenting.
