Excellent for mixed dry and water media
By watermedia artist
from Dexter, Michigan
Comments about Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Boards and Sheets:
I use the boards to combine water media such as watercolor, acrylic ink, water-soluble crayons and acrylic paint. There is also enough tooth for thin layers of dry media like pastel pencils or conte crayons. I paint on the boards directly or coat them with a thin layer of acrylic gesso to add texture. If you do that, apply gesso to both sides to prevent warping as the gesso dries. I have not had a problem with these warping. They are sturdy and hold their shape well -- they don't buckle so the don't need to be taped or stapled down to use with watercolor.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Love this store! Found all things I needed for paiting!
from Henniker NH
I used the board for oil painting, or watercolor. Great quality! I tell al my friends about this store.
from Dallas, TX
I bought this paper in large sheets to make my own travel journal. I am mainly a graphite artist and I wanted sheets of tracing paper bound into the book to keep my drawings from smearing until I can spray them with fixative. This is great paper for graphite but I can also use ink and light watercolor washes without bleed through or buckling.

I would by this product again, definitely!
By Beth N
from Marietta, Ohio
I was very excited to discover this paper. It is a great surface for drawing with compressed charcoal as well as using it for fluid acrylics. I have gessoed lightly before painting as well as worked straight onto unprimed paper. Very economical for a multitude of uses. I have used the roll, single sheets and the boards. I love this paper.I will recommend this paper to students.

A staple for me
from Seattle, WA
These boards have the Strathmore quality to them and are a great, ready-cut surface for painting. I use gouache and ink on them and I love their sturdiness (they take water media very well, no buckling) and standard size. Just grab one out of the pack and paint. Very convenient!

Great for colored pencil
By Portrait Artist
from Atlanta, GA
This is the BEST for colored pencil. Enough tooth for many layers, but very smooth effects are possible. I have tried just about every paper out there, and this is absolutely my favorite, especially good with Faber Castell and Lyra oil based pencils. I have also used it for watercolor washes combined with colored pencil, and it performs beautifully.

Surface is too slick
Canvas board or Art Spectrum Colourfix Multi-Media Painting Board is better if you want even a little tooth on the surface.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Canvas Board and Colourfix are unique surfaces in comparison to the Strathmore Mixed Media Boards which are more similar in tooth and appearance to Bristol boards. Great surfaces for traditional drawing techniques and wet media such as inks, markers, and watercolor.
