Comments about Strathmore 400 Series Mixed Media Pads:
Tan & grey were darker than i hoped for. I wouldn't have ordered if i'd seen them beforehand. The colors will work for another project sometime.

My favorite paper
from San Diego, CA
I teach watercolor painting on cruise ships. I'm just completing a 6 week cruise on which I used this paper for the first time. I do a urban sketching style (ink pen and watercolor wash) and have found this paper gives me the best results. I also use tradional cold press watercolor paper but this mixed media paper is what I'm using the most. I do 5-8 paintings a day, portraits and landscapes, and am delighted with the results.

Truly mixed media
If I had to chose a single paper to use for the rest of my life, this would be it. You can do literally anything on it. The surface feels like a harder, stiffer hot press watercolor paper. Most MM papers aren't very nice to draw on, but this one is great. It's smooth and bright enough, just like a good bristol board, to use for detailed pen and ink. It's heavy and sturdy enough to take massive watercolor washes, and warps a bit but doesn't buckle up like other MM papers. The lack of buckling means I can gesso a whole page to use for oil. I use acrylic all the time as well. It handles watercolor well, though keep in mind it's very smooth and watercolor won't look the same as on cold-press watercolor paper. The only medium I've had a little difficulty with was gouache - there's not quite enough tooth to hold thick gouache, though washes are fine. Of course, something that works for everything will never be ideal for one thing, so don't expect this stuff to replace your watercolor paper or canvas. But if you want a good sturdy paper that will take anything you throw at it, this is it.
Excellent paper. For SO many uses!

I've tried other papers - but always end up happiest with what I've done on this paper.

Love this paper!

The paper is perfect for mixed media. I do calligraphy and watercolor. It doesn't bleed through and is strong enough for watercolor. This size is hard to find in stores so I'm so glad dick blick carries it!
A definite 5 star!
from Cleveland, Oh
I make cards as a hobby and often times love working with different media, watercolors, embossing paste, inks, die cutting. This works for everything! Even kids love it since they can literally rinse off the watercolor if they have a mess. Fantastic for so many different things. Colored pencils are the only thing that don't work as well. Love this product and Dick Blick has fantastic deals on it sometimes. I have not met one person using it who doesn't love it.
Love the sizes
from Myrtle Beach, SC
I really love having different sizes of pads. The paper quality is excellent. I can use this paper for water markers, alcohol markers, colored and watercolor pencils and even some watercolor. I chose to write a review so you will know how well it works - not for compensation.
My favorite illustration paper
By Illustrator in Cali
from Hanford, CA
I am so glad I found this paper. I use it just like I would use illustration board. It takes as many washes as I throw at it. It doesn't buckle! It performs better than any watercolor paper that I have tried and it is smooth. Perfect texture for pen and ink, and fine details. I love it because I can use it with a light box, and it is so easy to scan illustrations. The 18x24 size is perfect for illustrations that are 2 page spreads.I hope Strathmore never discontinues this or changes the quality.
