Stillman & Birn offers a sketchbook system that gives artists a choice of paper weight, shade, and surface, allowing them to choose the sketchbook best suited for their media and techniques.
Appropriate for studies rendered with dry media and ink, as well as mixed media artwork, the robust paper is internally and surfaced sized to provide exceptional wet strength for layering of wet media, lifting of pigment, and repeated erasing without damage.
Available in both hardbound and wirebound formats, these sketchbooks contain multiple sheets of 100 lb (150 gsm) natural white paper with a vellum surface and a distinctive tooth. Ideal for dry media and light washes, the paper is both internally sized and surface-sized. The hardbound sketchbooks contain 62 sheets (124 pages) of paper. The wirebound sketchbooks contain 50 sheets (100 pages) of paper.

Comments about Stillman & Birn Archival Sketchbooks:
These are wonderful sketchbooks. I love the the 6x8 spiral bound Beta sketchbook because I can throw it in my purse and whip it out when a scene strikes my fancy. Both the cover and paper are ideal for Watercolors on-the-go. I highly recommend these in all sizes!!!

Love these Sketch books!!
from San Jose, CA
I love these sketchbooks. With the 180lb paper that takes watercolor, pen. pencil Markers. etc. The water colors act more like hot press paper but that is good for me because it forces me to be fast and easy!!! These are great for Pen and ink drawings because the paper doesn't have to much tooth! There a the best general purpose all around sketch, travel journals ever!John Ediger

Best artist books on the planet. No doubt.
from San Leandro, CA
I travel so I need a great sketchbook that holds up well, can take abuse and has a smooth surface that I love. If you slowly bend the spine and flatten the book it will lay pretty flat for across the gutter work. It takes any medium and doesn't buckle. Since I found these, I use them for almost all my work.
I love it!!

I love this Beta book so much! It's takes nearly everything beautifully! If I add too much water I did notice the paper coming apart I think... But I've done several paintings in it and didn't face the same problem. All in all great book! I'm in love with it and plan to get another~!

I like the strong paper and whiteness of the surface. Spiral binding makes it easy to use. Nice heavy cover, also.

I love this paper, as it takes ink and color exceptionally and is a nice bright white which I prefer for my ink sketches. The book is well made and travels with me everywhere.

Binding is awesome and more
Sketchbooks' performance for each individual is based on what materials are used to be able to create. There are various types within this category and if you do your research to pick the right sketchbook for your purposes, you will find little to complain about. The binding in all of them are impressive and I love not having to worry if it will fall apart with use. Do not buy the lighter weight paper in your sketchbook if you want to do wet washes; do not purchase the thinnest paper if you know your markers have a tendency to bleed through... It is not 5 stars for me only because the number of sheets in the heavier paper type of sketchbooks are significantly fewer and it feels like my choice of medium(s) put me in financially unfair disadvantage.

For me I like pencil and I think the paper is better for maybe some light watercolor and pen maybe. the construction of the book is great. Able to fold back the pages in the center to make the seem flat. Unable to do that in other sketch books. Nice heavy paper but for me personally I like a smoother paper but the paper hear seems pretty durable so maybe can take some abuse.I think it might be better for pen type mediums and if you want a smooth surface for pencils this isn't the paper. But all in all it seems like a good healthy study sketchbook of good quality.
