Stillman & Birn offers a sketchbook system that gives artists a choice of paper weight, shade, and surface, allowing them to choose the sketchbook best suited for their media and techniques.
Appropriate for studies rendered with dry media and ink, as well as mixed media artwork, the robust paper is internally and surfaced sized to provide exceptional wet strength for layering of wet media, lifting of pigment, and repeated erasing without damage.
Available in both hardbound and wirebound formats, these sketchbooks contain multiple sheets of 100 lb (150 gsm) natural white paper with a vellum surface and a distinctive tooth. Ideal for dry media and light washes, the paper is both internally sized and surface-sized. The hardbound sketchbooks contain 62 sheets (124 pages) of paper. The wirebound sketchbooks contain 50 sheets (100 pages) of paper.
Available in a wirebound format, these sketchbooks contain 25 sheets (50 pages) of 180 lb (270 gsm), natural white paper with a rough surface. Ideal for multi-media renderings, the paper has a substantial tooth, as well as enhanced wet strength and tear strength.

My favorite sketchbook!
from Bangor, Maine
Comments about Stillman & Birn Archival Sketchbooks:
Stillman and Birn's alpha sketchbooks are amazing. The paper quality is really good with nice, heavyweight paper that can take just about any medium you throw at it! Graphite and colored pencils look really good, pastels seem to do well, but be careful of micron pens because the tooth of the paper could wear it down quickly! I bought this sketchbook mainly for watercolor, and it didn't disappoint. The paper is heavy enough to withstand many layers, but watercolor and acrylic WILL buckle if you're putting down too much water. This may be a concern for others, but I think it adds character. I've also layed down a ton of India ink onto pages sometimes and it doesn't bleed through, only warp. Honestly the only time you should be concerned about bleed-through is with alcohol based markers. The binding on the hardback sketchbooks are great. Once you break in the binding (bend the book until both covers are touching eachother repeatedly) it lays flat, which is always a nice touch!! Although the cover has gotten a little loose, it should probably be expected if you're always taking it in and out of your backpack for a year. If you're not a student, yours will probably wear down slower lol. Overall, I really love these sketchbooks and think they're well worth the cost of you want a high-quality watercolor sketchbook with a lot of pages!

The spiral bound quality excellent. The paper quality is comparable to the Robert Bateman and Derwent Sketchbooks. Watercolor will buckle paper slightly. Works well with gouache, graphite, colored pencil and ink.

Zeta Series is best multi-media sketchbook
from Cedar Falls, Iowa
I've tried other Stillman & Birn series sketchbooks. This is my favorite. Love the weight and surface for both wet and dry media. I always get the wirebound. I like both sizes offered.

Multimedia go-to sketchbook
from Cedar Falls, IA
Zeta Series is my current favorite. (I have used Beta & Gamma). I draw from direct observation and tend toward multimedia drawings--wet and dry on the same page. There is a clarity of work done on this paper that is exceptional.

I use the Zeta hard bound sketchbook as a journal/idea book. This allows the use of all kinds of media. I have use gouache, acrylic, and watercolor without the pages buckling. Keep in mind, this is not a true watercolor paper but a very smooth heavy paper that is great to work on. This is the only series I have tried, and I am very pleased with this product!
