Stillman & Birn created its sketchbooks based on a simple premise — when it comes to sketchbooks, paper matters!

These sketchbooks are made with high-performance archival papers, and most are offered in both hardbound and wirebound formats. Features include:

Archival-grade drawing paper
A choice of two paper shades: Natural White and Ivory
A choice of two paper weights: Heavy Weight (100 lb, 150 gsm) and Extra Heavy Weight (180 lb, 270 gsm)
A choice of three paper surfaces, Vellum, Rough, and Plate
Erasure characteristics that are compatible with precision erasing techniques
Heavy-duty binder boards that are super-tough and warp-resistant
Bound in the U.S.

There are six series in the Stillman & Birn Sketchbook line — Alpha Series, Beta Series, Gamma Series, Delta Series, Epsilon Series, and Zeta Series.

Gamma Series — Available in both hardbound and wirebound formats, these sketchbooks contain multiple sheets of 100 lb (150 gsm), ivory paper with a vellum surface and a distinctive tooth. Ideal for dry media and light washes, the paper is both internally sized and surface-sized. The hardbound sketchbooks contain 62 sheets (124 pages) of paper. The wirebound sketchbooks contain 50 sheets (100 pages) of paper.

I work in 4" x 6" Stillman and Birn Gamma every day. After years of trying other pocket sized books, I was delighted to find the Gamma. I use primarily watercolors and graphite, and the paper is perfect for this; it can withstand more than just a light wash, although if the page starts to get really wet I pause and let it dry out a bit before continuing. But maybe my *favorite* thing about this book is the color of the paper; it's a gorgeous soft ivory.

Love this book and highly recommend it to all artists...

I'm so happy that Blick is carrying Stillman and Birn journals! The only thing that'd make me happier is if they carried all of the sizes, and the new hardbound 'beta' and 'delta'!

I've filled three 'gammas' (using watercolors, ink, and colored pencils) and am currently working in a 'delta'. The paper is gorgeous and the binding a dream; the books lay open flat from start to finish.
