Stillman & Birn created its sketchbooks based on a simple premise — when it comes to sketchbooks, paper matters!

These sketchbooks are made with high-performance archival papers, and most are offered in both hardbound and wirebound formats. Features include:

Archival-grade drawing paper
A choice of two paper shades: Natural White and Ivory
A choice of two paper weights: Heavy Weight (100 lb, 150 gsm) and Extra Heavy Weight (180 lb, 270 gsm)
A choice of three paper surfaces, Vellum, Rough, and Plate
Erasure characteristics that are compatible with precision erasing techniques
Heavy-duty binder boards that are super-tough and warp-resistant
Bound in the U.S.

There are six series in the Stillman & Birn Sketchbook line — Alpha Series, Beta Series, Gamma Series, Delta Series, Epsilon Series, and Zeta Series.

Beta Series — Available in a wirebound format, these sketchbooks contain 25 sheets (50 pages) of 180 lb (270 gsm), natural white paper with a rough surface. Ideal for multi-media renderings, the paper has a substantial tooth, as well as enhanced wet strength and tear strength.

I've been searching for the perfect watercolor sketchbook for ages and came across the Stillman & Birn Beta Series late last year. I do a lot of travel journaling and like to work in watercolor and other wet media a lot while out and about. This book is the perfect companion. The thing I find most amazing is the beautiful quality paper, the light watercolor texture, and the way it holds strongly to heavy washes. I love it so much I went and bought it in several sizes in both hard bound and spiral. It really is the best watercolor sketchbook I've come across.

Everything about the Stillman and Birn Beta is perfect! The paper is great to draw on - not too rough; watercolors are brilliant on it; and the paper is strong - it can take whatever you throw at it without buckling.

If you want to work in a book with strong and beautiful paper, this is it. The hardbound Beta is bound so that the book lays open flat no matter where you are in it.

If you are a serious artist, sketcher, love to art journal or just doodle you will LOVE this sketchbook. Beautiful 180lb, lightly textured heavy weight paper that stands up to anything and I mean ANYTHING! I've used these for a huge variety of media, including pencil, watercolor pencil, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, fluid acrylic, marker, pen, pen and ink, brush and dip pens, gel pens, metallic pens, conte, graphite, colored pencils, often mixing media in a single drawing. No bleed through, no buckling, no disturbance of the paper's surface (peeling, fuzzy, abraided)even when scrubbing, lifting or using a fair amount of water. There is something very satisfying about working on a really heavy weight paper. It makes me feel like I can do anything, experiment, layer without worrying that it will be ruined because the paper gave out. The paper is internally and externally sized and archival (a big plus). The spiral bound is nice and the hardbound lays flat when open so you can work across a two page spread. This is my go to sketchbook and I love it. If you like a more refined paper than you'll like the Alpha or Epsilon series from Stillman & Birn.
