Sharpens well if used right
from Bellingham WA
Comments about Staedtler Mars Lead Pointer:
I agree with RS (4/1/16 review). The two depth gauges provide the right lead length for sharp and blunter points, and if the barrel is held lightly when rotating the top, there is rarely lead breakage. It is clean and efficient when used at the desk, but you will want to keep it in a sealed plastic bag when carrying it and expect graphite dust to leak and cover the barrel if not kept upright.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Simple & Straight to the point!
from Massanutten, VA
I've had this product for several years and it still works great. Most of the reviews here seem to be from folks who couldn't quite figure out how to use it. Take it apart and its evident! The little holes are there to measure your lead depending on if you want a sharp point or blunt point. After you drop your lead into the hole release the clamp so it holds it in place then push it into the large hole that the holder fits into, then gently turn it around (let it rest gently/loosely between your fingers DO NOT hold onto the lead holder tightly or you will break the lead) when you can feel it move smoothly with no resistance from the lead your done. See images for the point I just achieved on a hard lead. Great product, works every time and it has never broken a lead.

lead breaker > lead pointer...
By Broken Lead Avenger
from dallas tx
this is an insult to lead pointers and sharpeners across the board. you will probably break a whole stick of lead before getting any sort of point. Seriously stupid design puts pressure on the exposed lead which must be extended a good length to reach the actual grinding mechanism, so it doesn't take much to break your lead and waste $$ every time you need to sharpen it. serious disappointment from a company I previously enjoyed using.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Can't get a sharp point
from Petaluma, CA
It has been helpful to read the reviews here. I was clueless as to how to use the sharpener. Now I understand, but I still can't get a sharp point. Question: How much of the graphite stick should be protruding from the holder when I sharpen it?

The stadler barrel sharpener isn't too great. I had an old one, but I lost it, I am not sure if it was a staedler, but it was much better. On the one I got the fit was loss and the edges were rough meaning it does not spin around to sharpen that well. looking at other products, my old one may have been the alvin barrel sharpener, also sold at blick. next time I have to buy one, I will try it. though seeing as the one I have now works, that will probably not be for a while.(This was a gift from a freind)

I am a first year architecture student in college and I absolutely love using this lead pointer to do my assignments. It was a great deal, came in great condition, and got sent to me very quickly. I will definitely be ordering all of my other equipment from this website! Very impressed!

Incapable of a needle point
By Quality Control Paul
from Ballston Spa, NY
First, for those unfamiliar with this type of sharpener, it is only for 2 mm drafting leads that are used with specialized mechanical lead holders. It is NOT for wood or mechanical pencils.Like all lead pointers, this one has 2 slots on top for determining the precise length of lead to be sharpened, for either a blunt or sharp point. For softer leads, the blunt point is best, as a needle point would immediately break, and in this respect, the Steadler Mars is like any other lead pointer. But if you're using a hard lead, which can hold a needle point, you're out of luck with this brand. That's because it's designed to produce a not-quite needle point, as evidenced by the little embossed symbol at the deeper of the 2 slots. That makes it useless to me, and I will be returning it as soon as I get a brand that can produce a true needle point, which is probably any other brand
It does what is intended to do!
I've used this product since 1994 when I went to drafting school. Still have it, I've had more trouble finding 2mm leads (can only find it online), which means that the sharpener outlasted the pencil. Yes, it is messy for transportation-solution:empty it before transporting! If you like really sharp lead points-this is the way to go, it is not that complicated, after all, it is just a sharpener! By the way-mine is a beautiful cerulean blue.
Works great, gets dirty when transportin

I've used this pointer to sharpen a 2 mm Staedtler lead, 4B softness, that I keep in a lead holder. I've been satisfied with it, until I took it on the road. In its zip-top bag, the graphite dust leaked out of the lead pointer and got all over the outside of the lead pointer and inside of the plastic bag. I've just finished cleaning it with a few baby wipes and disposing of the bag, but now what? I need to take my drawing supplies with me every week. I'll look around for something similar that contains the dust. I realize that's not an easy feat. I'd be sorry to have to leave my lead, lead holder, and lead pointer at home.
