These high quality graphite pencils glide smoothly over the paper. They are highly break-resistant and easy to erase. The entire length of the graphite pencil lead is bonded to the wood to help prevent breakage, especially when sharpening.

They're available from Staedtler in finely differentiated degrees from especially soft (8B) to extra hard (6H). Soft leads are best suited to sketching and blending. Harder pencils excel for their ability to hold sharp points, and are used for straight line and detail work.

Pencils are pre-sharpened.

Sketching and Design Sets — Each contains an assortment of pencils in varying degrees of hardness, for fine drawing, sketching, and blending. They vary from 6 degrees up to 16 degrees of hardness and softness.

7B and 8B Weirdness

The 7B and 8B neither feel nor look like graphite. Whereas soft graphite feels slippery while drawing and has a characteristic sheen on the paper, these two pencils feel sticky while drawing and are completely matte on the paper. Therefore, if you combine either of them with other brands or degrees of graphite, the surface of your drawing will have a distracting inconsistency - shiny in some places and matte in others.

The other degrees I've tried have this problem little or not at all. They're OK but lack any of the dsitinctive virtues I find in Caran d'Ache, Cretacolor, or Faber Castell pencils.

Staedler used to make excellent products. This is the third product of theirs that I've reviewed and found inexcusable problems with. While I don't know what's going on at Staedler, what I see would be consistent with a change of management that neither knows nor cares about art materials and looks for ways to sacrifice quality for the sake of squeezing out more profit. It amounts to being contemptuous of artists. If you buy anything Staedler, save your receipt.

I use 3H and 4 H often for detail and find this stays sharp well. Very smooth and no gritty bits. I find these the most consistent for smooth pale shading on pretty much any tooth paper that I want to use.

I use it for sketches and regular pencil projects. They sharpen very easily, they hardly ever break. The lights and darks the product has is very good. Personally I would recommend the soft pencils like 2B and under since that's mostly for artists. The darker ones are good too but mostly for engineers or design ideas.

I do pet drawings and these are the best pencils I have found. I have "help" from my own cat and dogs when I am drawing. Many times they end up on the floor, being stepped or sat on,by them and sometimes me. Very rare to have lead breakage with these pencils. Keeps a good fine point for detail also.

These pencils are "best in its category" from 6H-6B. I honestly was disappointed in the 7B and 8B-its not graphite. I'm having a hard time deciding if it's black colored pencil or carbon pencil. It's probably carbon because it's smooth and matte, which honestly is not a bad thing as i work with graphite, charcoal, and carbon. Sometimes i mix and match, but other times i like to use just one. When shading, i jump from 8B to 7B to 6B and run the 6B over everything to make it look more like graphite, but there is always a noticeable difference between the black and the graphite. 6H-6B deserve a 5 star, no doubt, but for the 7B and 8B, i put them with my carbon pencils and bought Derwent Graphic 7B-9B pencils.

These pencils are high quality at a low cost. I have tried various brand name pencils and they don't seem to give the quality that the Staedtler Lumograph pencils give.
They offer a wide variety of grades from 8H-8B.
I tend to use a lot of the darker grades. The 8B pencil has a very dark grade to it that other pencil brands cannot offer.
If you are looking for great quality pencils I highly recamend these Staedtler Lumograph pencils.
As for any Cons: There is none!

These pencils glide effortlessly across the paper. They are so smooth and don't have the "scratchy" hard spots I've found with other pencils. I've also never had a lead break while sharpening...which I can't say about any other brand.

My favorite (woodcased) pencil by far.
