Comments about Speedball Lettering Nibs:
The product is of fine quality and I am happy with it. I am writing this review, also, to share my great surprise and disgust with the wasteful packaging. The dimensions of the item I ordered was approximately 1.5" x 1" x .3". It arriving having been shipped in a box that was 18" x 12" x 3" which an abundance of paper. Please, please respectfully guide your shipping department to be more resource conscious. Thank you.

Great product, great service, great price
I have used these pens professionally for over 35 years. My students find them easy to use. The left-handers in my class have an easy time with the left-handed nibs. They can be honed slightly for thinner lines. They just work well.
Great Service - Okay Product

Although this is not a "Blick" product but a speedball product. My left handed student was not fully satisfied with the "LC" type nibs. They obviously worked better than a standard right hand nib but the thick and thins of the letter forms where opposite of the true font style that he was mimicking. The ink flowed well with all the other nibs. Great service from Blick in getting them to me quickly so my left handed student could stay up with the class.
Lefty Calligraphy Nibs are Fantastic

I am just learning calligraphy, and will be starting a class in two weeks. I have been practicing with these nibs, and it is so wonderful to have left handed nibs instead of having to use right handed ones.It makes learning so much easier.
I have used speedball pens for years as a calligrapher and for my students. They are easy to use and last.
Read Comics? Then You've Seen These Nibs In Action.

Speedball nibs are widely used by professional cartoonists including Lynn Johnston of "For Better Or For Worse" (C-6 nib for all drawing and lettering) and graphic novel artists. I was surprised to learn dip pens remain the standard for artists and cartoonists regardless of the new brush pens and markers out there. You have to remove the coating from the nibs which keeps them from rusting while in their packages (google your options I read people use anything from dish soap to spit) and nibs take getting used to and can be a tad messy for the novice (I went to work with ink stains under my nails despite a rigorous scrubbing) but they're less expensive than modern alternatives and unless you make big bucks off your craft (not me) and need to pinch pennies to work on your art (me) most any Speedball product is worth a test run. I really enjoyed the ritual of using tools like dip pens and the challenge of learning how they work and it's all about that line variation. I had a drawing completed with one pen nib that would take 2 or 3 different modern pens to pull off and I drew 2 of the same thing one with modern pens (Microns) and one with a dip pen nib and when asked people told me they liked the dip pen version and said it popped off the page more and was more crisp with a richer, denser quality than the Micron drawing. As a fan of Microns (also used by many pro's), Papermate flairs (Berke Breathed "Bloom County") and Sharpies (found in any artist's arsenal) I wanted to try using the tools of old without breaking the bank and for around $10 I was able to load up on a few nibs, holders and ink to play with. Now I have some extra cash to try the mighty weasel brush for inking. Those kolinsky brushes are outrageous in price and I feel for the poor lil' critters they use to make 'em (hair from tales of males of a certain age I read but what do they do with the rest of the animal?) and lots of pro inkers and artists use dip pen nibs to get similar line variation without having to deal with brushes. and no 2 brushes are the same in many cases you get a winner or a dud and you never know which until you use it. nibs can be that way too but the C style nibs are pretty stiff so I'm sure you get more winners than losers with these nibs. This was my first time ordering from BLICK and even with shipping & handling costs it's still a great value and service. I'll still keep the modern pens nearby but it's fun adding to my toolbox.
Blick is always reliable for items I nee
from Phoenix, AZ
Blick is the only place I have found that I can buy Speedball calligraphy nibs in the sizes I need, in bulk. On top of that they give me a better price, the more I buy. It's a win-win situation for me and my budget!

Especially forgiving for first time liquid ink users
The service from Blick is terrific and the product just what I expected, but I wish there was an alternative shipping method as the flat rate is not always the most economical choice. It cost me $8 to ship two tiny pen nibs. Ouch!
