Welcome to dickblick
These ready-to-paint, tempered hardboard panels are factory-coated with gesso. They're excellent for oils, acrylics, gouache, egg tempera, or pen-and-ink.
Panels have a smooth surface. Each panel is 1/8" (3 mm) thick.
Note — The permanence of tempered hardboard as a painting surface is unknown. Paintings are known to have survived intact from the 1930s.

OK, but don't expect miracles

Comments about Gessoed Hardboard Panels:
Think of these as primed boards needing another coat or two of gesso. And be warned - you will need to abrade the surface before gessoing if you want anything to hold - even the mfg ways this. I know! You thought you were buying gessoed boards, didn't you?! Me, too. They are smooth instead of Blick's popcorn ceiling finish which interferes with a lot of techniques (but if you sand them, they can be quite serviceable). I haven't tried it, but these Speedball panels might be good for silverpoint, except I have the feeling it is even too slick to catch the silverpoint. If you want ready-to-paint surface, Ampersand is the boss. An initial attempt found that the board held a light underpainted drawing very well, but don't even think of going more than a light layer if you don't amend this surface.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hard to believe this is a gesso surface as it is so slick and shiny. I don't think even acrylic would stick to this. It is advised to sand and gesso for more tooth, so thees don't really compare to Ampersand's ready-to-go gesso panels. An extra step I had hoped to skip but the price is low. Lesson learned. Still glad to have the panels cut and pre-sized for gesso. Ugh. Sanding. Honestly, even gesso won't stick to these dependably without sanding.
Perfect for What They Are!

These boards are perfect for quick painting sketches. I buy them for a plein air class that uses 3 to 4 boards per session. I have to re-gesso these before use as the surface is too smooth and shiny for my needs, but it's an easy process and well worth the price savings. If you need a surface for the next Great American Art Treasure these probably aren't for you... but if you're looking for inexpensive, good quality Masonite panels in bulk you can't beat this value!

I have always used other super smooth panels for my oil paintings and really struggled to get the oil paint to stay put, it would just slide around. In order to combat this problem I would put a few coats of gesso on but it would loose the benefit of using something super smooth. I was very impressed when these panels showed up and there was just a touch (almost unable to feel it but enough to grab.). I have yet to paint an actual painting on these panels but I did do some work on a color wheel using this panel as was so increadibly happy with them. I don't foresee myself using any other panels to paint on. Very very good product for the price.

I guess it's true, you get what you pay for. These are very affordable, which is why I bought them, but in order to use them I had to apply gesso (paint would not adhere otherwise, the brush continued to lift the paint/slide it around to reveal the board). Invest in something that is a better quality, you'll be happier with the outcome.

My Families Favorite

These boards are prefect for my family. Since they are gessoed and ready, and relatively inexpensive I keep 20 or so of these on hand at all times. With three sons sharing my studio space to have this product available when the urge strikes makes us all very happy. Thanks Blick!

Not what I'm used to.
These panels are not comparable to ampersand panels. These seem to have a rather thin coating of gesso. The gesso looks more like a semi gloss enamel paint than gesso. There is a slight texture to them like the two is applied with a wide rubber for. The color seemed to be slightly off white. These are not up to my standard for my Airbrush work. I had to sand and re gesso these to be usable.
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that these panels didn't have the surface you expected. Please know that if ever you feel a product you purchase from us doesn't meet your needs, we're happy to help with a return or exchange. Just call 1-800-723-2787 to speak to a Customer Care Agent.
Great used as is.
Travel with gessoed panels
from Yellowstone, Montana
I recently travelled to the New England states to paint fall foliage. It was very easy to travel with these gessoed panels. Great painting surface! They are lightweight and sturdy. And they were easy to transport back home.
