Welcome to dickblick
These ready-to-paint, tempered hardboard panels are factory-coated with gesso. They're excellent for oils, acrylics, gouache, egg tempera, or pen-and-ink.
Panels have a smooth surface. Each panel is 1/8" (3 mm) thick.
Note — The permanence of tempered hardboard as a painting surface is unknown. Paintings are known to have survived intact from the 1930s.

Great for daily painting
from Kansas City, Mo
I love that these store easily and are affordable. I bought many of these in 8" x 10" to do a small painting every morning for 30 days or as long as I can without breaking the chain. I love the surface for painting and it's a no fuss, low pressure way to just pull out a panel and get started painting.
Great price, great board, no-grip finish
By Volunteer Art Teacher

For beginner acrylic painters, the finish was disappointing. I will have to gesso the remainder of what I ordered in order to use them with my students.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Good for practicing
I use acrylics and After reading the reviews I pretty much knew what I was getting. I used them to practice techniques and ideas. The surface is really slick, so I put a thin, tinted, gesso base down and it gave it more tooth. The acrylics will scratch off the surface really easy after they dry. But when I applied a sealer/Matt finish, it was fine. Best thing is the price. You can afford to try them out. And if you end up hating them, no big loss..

LIKE PAINTING ON GLASS
from NEW JERSEY
priming just too slick for acrylic, to my horror paint scraped off finished paintings would be fantastic if manufacturer would use a real acrylic gesso ,the priming is like glass , still a bargain but you have to gesso the back of the panel with quality priming , please speedball fix it !!!

You get what you pay for
The price is right but the surface is just too slick.Realizing I had a problem, I researched online and realized (too late) I had yielded to the temptation of price. The surface is simply too slick. Other uses suggest that one should sand it, then apply gesso or oil ground. That is what I will have to do.Next order, I will try the Ampersand brand. I understand (but have not tested) that Ampersand has a surface with more tooth.
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that these panels didn't have the surface you were looking for. One of our Customer Care Team Members will be reaching out to offer further assistance.
Better than you might think
from Daytona Beach, FL
Sometimes you want to use a firmer support rather than the bounce of a stretched canvas or the rougher tooth of a canvas panel. These panels are great for smooth blending with just enough tooth to pull the paint from the brush.
I'm very happy with these panels.
from Boulder, CO
For the price, I haven't found anything better or more versatile. After applying a light coat of gesso these panels are fantastic with watercolor as well as oil and acrylic. I have ordered them in various sizes quite a few times and they have arrived without damage. The only problem I see is that some people may not want to go to the trouble of applying gesso and I don't think they would be a very good surface for paint without it.
Easy to use
from Brooklyn, NY
These gessoed boards are perfect for beginners and masters alike. Not having a lot of storage and work space, these are great options and easy to use.
Paint does not adhere !
Acrylic paint does not adhere to the surface. You can just scrape it off completely with a palette knife after its dry. Not acceptable at all if you're a professional artist. It's too bad cause it would be nice to be able to buy some gessoed panels and not have to spend time preparing the surface.. Unfortunately I have had to just gesso the back of the panels with normal gesso that actually functions and hold acrylic paint.Though since these are really inexpensive ,.. It's not so bad to just buy them as Masonite panels knowing you will just prepare the back surface as your functioning work surface and chalk up the weird concoction they have used to prepare the other side, which does not hold paint properly as a "back of the panel protector" ...... It's still easier to just mail order these than it is to buy Masonite from the hardware store and make a bunch of cuts. I just wish they had just used normal gesso !!
