This is the fixative you've been waiting for!
Non-toxic, workable, and fully archival, SpectraFix is a casein-based fixative that utilizes milk protein and grain alcohol to hold and protect your media without dulling or darkening colors. Because it's all-natural and odor-free, you can spray your project indoors while you work — no more odors, unhealthy fumes, or long waits outdoors!
Endorsed by artists, teaching professionals, and educators alike, SpectraFix easily disperses a fine cloud of fixative mist over artwork, leaving colors brilliant without altering the hue. It dries quickly to an invisible, non-yellowing, matte finish, and provides traction to allow multiple layering of pastels.
SpectraFix is ideal for use with pastel, charcoal, watercolor, gouache, Conté crayon, casein, under oil paints, and for crossover techniques. It works beautifully on all popular papers, including Wallis, ColorFix, La Carte, Pastelbord, UArt, Gatorfoam, Canson, and all watercolor, printing, and laid papers.
SpectraFix comes in a non-pressurized fine-mist pump sprayer that’s environmentally friendly, recyclable, and travels well.
Conforms to ASTM D-4236.

A good product!
Comments about SpectraFix Spray Fixative:
It was a large bottle. I like the fact that it was in a pump bottle. The product works good. I need to use it more, to know all it can do.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Works, but flawed
Love this stuff and it really works, but my issue is the spray valve as it sprays large drops and wrinkles the paper. I've swapped it for a trigger spray top. Other than that little setback, I am happy with my purchase and will be buying more of these because it's exactly what I needed.

Don't spray on 2-ply bristol!
from Dover, DE
I REALLY wanted this to work! It has absolutely NO odor - and fixes graphite amazingly well. But...I sprayed it on my Strathmore 400 smooth 2-ply bristol - and it buckled and curled like crazy. I tried taping all sides - and although it didn't buckle, it still curled into a perfect "C" shape. I tried all the "tips" with no improvement. If I worked on a different material - I would definitely use this! But as it is, it was a waste of money and time for me. (If it weren't for curling the bristol - I would give it 5 stars!)
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share experience with this fixative. For thinner papers, one additional suggestion is to use the concentrate rather than the pre-mixed version, and then use a strong alcohol, such as 90% Everclear, diluted with 1/3 with distilled water. This combination will have less water and more alcohol for faster evaporation. If we can be of further assistance in troubleshooting your application, we hope you'll feel welcome to reach out to our Product Information Team. An effective, non-darkening spray for pastels
By Bill Hansen
from Ithaca NY USA
I've just begun to use Spectrafix, but I'm pretty sure it will become my go-to fixative spray for both pastels and photo prints. Contrary to what a couple of others report, I found Spectrafix easy to use, even from the start. As the spray goes on, it does appear to darken the work significantly at first. But once the sprayed work has dried, this is no detectable darkening. Since it's alcohol based, it takes a bit longer to dry than the true aerosol fixatives - perhaps 10 to 20 minutes. For pastels, it stabilizes the pigment on the paper as well as the best of the aerosols. It's also a workable fixative, so you can spray your work, wait for it to dry, and apply further layers of color. It's available as a concentrate, so if you are willing to mix that concentrate with some alcohol, Spectrafix can be relatively inexpensive.

A Good Alternative To Aerosol Fixatives
from Garland, TX
I would give this 4.5 Stars so I've put 4. This is a great option for working in a space where you can't have toxic fumes. I use it in my classroom and at home. It loses a half of a star bc it doesn't always hold the pastel as well as I'd like, but that could also be a learning curve issue as I have not been using it for long and sometimes forget to spray between layers. I plan to continue working with it.
Fixative is GREAT. Sprayer not so much.
from Greenwich CT
The fixative works superbly however I am using a bottom feed air brush to spray panpastel. I am getting to layer as much color as I need to without degradation of color or tone. The bottle sprayer has too long a tube leading to the finger pump. An opportunity for clogging and air bubbles to cause splatter.

Good product, green for todays world. But watch out when spraying - test your first spray - so you don't get spits of product onto your paper. You want a fine mist, and it takes a couple of sprays sometimes to get this. First try, I got casein drops on my work - luckily they disappeared into the surface. Also, spray vertically onto your work.Able to rework the surface once on. Good!

It works! Though don't try to spray multiple sketchbook pages at once or they will stick together. Used on graphite drawings.
