Solar plate is an intaglio printing method that uses UV Light and water as an alternative to traditional etching methods, which use harsh and potentially dangerous chemicals.
This non-toxic, waterbased process uses fewer materials, has excellent resistance to solvent ink, and renders excellent, high-resolution prints with sharp details, with both waterbased and solvent-based inks.
Simply place an image printed on transparent film on top of a solar plate, expose it to UV Light for 1-4 minutes, wash with warm-to-hot tap water for 1–3 minutes, allow to dry (or use a hair dryer), and expose the plate to UV light for another three minutes to finish.

Comments about Solar Plates:
While the solar plate does not give the same fine-line detail that you could get from a zinc or copper plate, I am pleased with the results. When I pulled my first print about 1/2 hour after exposing the plate, it did not hold ink in some parts; however, the next day after it had sufficiently hardened, it printed up fine. When you rinse it after exposure, take care not to get overenthusiastic. I would order these plates again.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Practice makes imperfection
from Tucson, Az.
Recently purchased a press from Blick which I'm beyond happy with. Decided to try this solar plate instead of one I usually use. Zero documentation is provided. I followed what little instructions that are provided on product description. I purchased 9 pieces. I have attempted 5 exposures. I now have 5 scraps. I tried multiple methods and times using both the sun and exposure unit. No luck.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Needs improvement before it's competitive
Like the other reviewer who left a low rating, I have had the same problem over many many plates. The plate itself and the material has potential. The issue is in the protective covering. On every single plate, it has come unstuck from the plate surface which makes the plate dry out slightly in those spots. This leaves distinctive marks around the edge of the plate.Spend your money on the Yellow/Gold Solarplates, the official Solarplate. I have had virtually no issues with those. Blick and Utrecht have provided wonderful customer service, and I don't fault them for the effort. Another issue with these plates is that they have variations in size. That means if you want to do multiple plates, registration will be a nightmare. If they can get these recurring issues sorted out, these could be a great competitor to the Solarplates.

Great way to make plates
from Reno, NV
Good, reasonably priced solarplates. A less toxic way to make great plates for printing, and these work as well as any I have tried. Purchased in quantity, these are a terrific deal

Not satisfied with this product
from Evanston, Il
I ordered 10 8"x10" plates and all of them were defective. I returned them and the second batch was sent with the same defect. The top protective layer that is meant to be peeled away was not perfectly laminated to the plate. Instead all plates arrive wrapped in a very thin black plastic wrap and some were even torn and along the edges of each plate with the top protective layer pulled away at various corners and edges. This caused the emulsion to dry leaving a mark.I had no problem returning the second batch. I spoke to a customer service rep and they said this peeling away was a cause of the cutting of plates. I've ordered directly from other solar plate manufactures and they have never arrived in poor condition.
Merchant response: Thank you for your review! We have reviewed this issue with the manufacturer, and they advise that although the plastic coating may appear to not fully adhere near cut edges, the performance of the product should not be affected. If there's anything else we can do to assist you, please let us know!
