I've used Silver pure red sable brushes for several years. These are by far one of the best brushes for alkyd oils I've ever used. Alkyd oils are tough on any brush but with proper mixing with medium these are a true pleasure to work with; bristles won't flag even after numerous hours of use on course and medium weave canvas. They are worth every penny of the price.

Good for the price

I bought the 1/2" and 1/4" flat brushes, and though they are quality I don't know that I would recommend them over a nice synthetic of the same size. I also purchased a #10 Cat's Tongue, and it is pretty sweet.

Great brushes for oil painting detail work
from Ottawa, Canada
Another great short-handled detail brush not only for watermedia as stated, but excellent for detailed oil painting.I paint 5x7 cards with birds on them. The Cat's Tongue brush is especially valuable for getting fine lines and feathers and the eyes done... and supperb price also- can't go wrong here...

Comments about Silver Brush Renaissance Red Sable Round:
I used the product for my very first oil painting. I had so much fun painting it and partly because of my outstanding brushes!
More good choices than other sellers
It took a little time to wait for some back order items but it usually take Blick four or five days from ordering to shipping any way. I like to say that there are some other sellers that are quicker in shipping but they don't have many choices like Blick does.

Wonderful brush for oil portraits. Good for details.
A Very Good WC Brush
from San Jose
This brush is the closest thing I've found to the old Grumbacher gold handled 187 series brushes I bought in the 1980's and had that worked so well for many many years. This Silver brush may be the closest to a WN series 7 but without the price. I'd give a higher rating only I have not used it long enough to see how they hold up over time. The brush has spring, keeps a point, and holds water. The handle seems to be real wood. It's a good main wc brush for a serious painter.Unfortunately it seems Blicks or Silver discontinued the brush but maybe not. I bought 3 of the Round #10.
not so much!

I ordered the cat's tongue, a discontinued item at a discounted price, so I guess it was a solid value and the quality of the hair was probably above average. It's hard to judge because I've not used a cat's tongue brush before. However, I wasn't pleased with the thickness of the brush. I expected it to make a finer point with the tongue, and it seemed too thick in the belly relative to the tongue. I tried to remedy the situation by trimming a few hairs and ruined the brush. I think in future I'll just use two brushes, one for the wash and one for detail. It wasn't for me.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I am a professional, full time artist. My brushes must support my technique and offer superior handling qualities that are responsive to my touch and hand movements. The line of Silver Brush Renaissance red sable brushes does this consistently. I would recommend them highly to any painter who doesn't want to struggle with their tools.
