These were just great when I got them. Now I am not so sure. They are shedding and spiky in spite of babying and TLC cleaning (linseed oil soap). I wrote a glowing review of these brushes some time ago, hence this addendum. I tossed four of them out doing a portrait today as they are just not up to snuff now. I would suggest replacing these the minute they get frazzled which might be several times a year if you paint a lot. On the other hand, my Blick Masterstroke brushes are holding up really well. Silver Brush Ruby Satin brushes DO hold up and are a nice sable alternative and a workhorse.

If Robert Simmons' white bristle brushes didn't work for you, Silver Brush Grand Prix is the ultimate white bristle brush. The white bristles are more stiff, keep their points, edges, stay together longer than other same type brushes. I've never had a problem of hairs falling out of these brushes. Handle these brushes with respect, don't abuse them by leaving to stand in turpentine or oil, rinse them in turpentine, lay horizontal to rest, you won't loose the points, clean brushes carefully, & allow them to dry in horizontal position. Allowing turpentine, oils to absorb down into the ferrule of the brush may cause bristle hairs to fall out. These brushes are more expensive but worth it as the brushes give the best & finest results with oils.

I heard that this is the best brush in the category. I am not sure, but it is not like that... I was happy to get it and try it... It is not possible to buy it in Europe or I do not know where. After first use this brush change form a little and I was disappointed; I do not expect something like that after first use.

I was surprised to see some of the bristles pull away after two uses and two cleanings. Of course, I can still use them, but I got them for finer detail and I didn't expect them to have hairs spring away from the brush.

More specifically, the brushes were Silver #1 1003 Filbert and #2 Silver 1027 Extra Long Filbert and #3 Silver 1027 Extra Long Filbert

I am a professional portrait painter. I use a lot of art materials and products. I have used several brands of brushes. However, I prefer Silver Gran Prix and I consider this line of brushes among the best for portrait painting. I rely on the Silver GP, especially the rounds and the filberts. Thank you for this very professional product. Portraits range from 11x14 inches to six feet.
