So pretty but a nightmare to work with
from Blacksburg, VA
I was so excited for this paper and I swooned over it when it arrived. Unfortunately, after several attempts at using it like traditional watercolor paper, I have to say that's impossible. It can't handle multiple washes at all. Water makes little bumps of pulp appear on the surface, and it also makes the paper form little pills (like those fuzzballs sweaters form). It takes forever to dry. And I was doing some simple masking with masking tape, only to find that the tape lifted off the top layer of the paper, including some surrounding painted areas. If you can work with this, great. I haven't found a way to.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

texture is great but the watercolor sinks in and fades drastically. Disappointment but will gesso the paper and hope to recover.

This is great paper if you want something handmade with a lot of character. The deckle edges are pretty rough, it has a lot of texture, and most sheets are not perfectly rectangular, which is just what I was looking for.
Very nice paper
from Coos Bay, OR
I was very surprised at the results I obtained with this very nicely priced paper. The rough surface makes watercolor paintings look a bit like oil. The size makes it perfect for post card size art and the rough surface is great for special techniques. Drawbacks: not good with masking: it rips when you try to remove it. Also, avoid using too much water as it tends to get soggy. All in all, I really enjoy using this paper and the price was a steal.

I purchased the 6" rounds and I love them! They are a great rough surface for watercoloring. The paper holds color wonderfully, and is thick enough not to warp even when not stretched.

This paper has a beautiful tooth surface,, yet still maintained a crisp line with pen and ink work. I will definitely bookmark this one.

Shizen Watercolor Paper
from Milwaukee, Wisconsin
The 5 by 7 without the deckled edges is by far better if you want to get more definition....it is professional grade. Unfortunately, all of the other sizes and shapes are not the same grade, and therefore bleed quite a bit when you don't want them too. I was very disappointed when I found that out as one other reviewer here did. Now, I will have to hunt for the professional grade in the larger sizes.

I wish Blick had indicated that this paper is "School Grade," as I thought I was purchasing the Shizen 12x18" watercolor paper I had used before from another supplier. Turns out there are two kinds, and you guessed it, the paper I was trying to replace was "Professional Grade." While both surfaces are equally rough, the school grade paper doesn't have as much sizing and has a larger "grain" to it -- a bigger screen was used to produce it and you can see the mark of the weave of the screen on the paper. It will most definitely slurp up more paint or ink than the professional grade. Since it has its own inherent beauty, I'll use it, but I must say I'm disappointed that I'm not getting what I anticipated. I like Shizen paper, and I'd recommend it with the caveat that there are two grades of watercolor paper and the buyer should look into which one he or she would best prefer.

Fantastic bargain, these heavy sheets really hold water well, giving students affordable access to working with heavy paper. A nice thick stack that encourages experimentation, at this price there is no preciousness of the paper to slow.you down!
