Shiva Signature Oil Colors, manufactured since 1929, have gained a reputation for being a fine-quality paint with a friendly price tag.

Each pure Shiva pigment is ground to its own correct degree of fineness and formulated individually under exacting laboratory controls. Signature Oils are guaranteed to be absolutely permanent, and free from darkening, yellowing, fading, and cracking. A free color chart is available upon request.

Basic Set of 6 Colors — Contains six studio size 1.25 oz (37 ml) tubes in the following colors: Titanium White, Ivory Black, Shiva Yellow Light, Shiva Red Medium, Ultramarine Blue Deep, and Shiva Green.

Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.

I originally started using Shiva products when they were sold in California in Standard Brand stores. I find them to be unctuous, except for Shiva Orange which is a little short. These are far superior, in my opinion, to Windsor Newton, Grumbacher and Holbein. I realize "unctuous" is usually used for food referring to "mouth feel" but looking at these paints gives me the same experience. I am grateful to Blick for carrying these find paints as I cannot get them in my town.

Shiva oils are a solid artist quality paint. They have a really nice thick consistency that I like a lot. And you can't beat the price. It's surprising just how good they are when you look at the price.

I discovered Shiva paints after my Mother died and I was going through her old paints. I tried the tube of Raw Sienna and loved it. I was thrilled to find out Shiva was still being made and that the price is fantastic for the quality. Thanks Jack Richeson! I bought a tube of Burnt Umber and it was runny. You had to pore the oil out before squeezing the tube. I called Shiva and they replaced the tube for free. The new tube is MUCH better, nice and creamy, just what I wanted in my paint, smooth and creamy, great coverage, great price and a quality paint that is affordable. It is my number one brand and as I use up the other stiffer brands, they get replaced with Shiva.

I started using this paint at a Daniel E. Greene workshop and thought it was good. Then I went to a workshop with a different artist who required us to buy a more expensive brand of paint. The Richeson Shiva paints were just as good if not better than the expensive paints. Then I tested them against all the brands I have at home (a considerable number) and found them to be GREAT paints! I wish they'd bring out some Quinacridone though.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

For example, clicking on the item number 00416-3173, which is the Rose Red in the Shiva Signature Oils Colors, will bring up a page with a color swatch. Click on the tab that says “Pigment Info” to bring up information on the pigments used. In this example, the pigments in Rose Red are PR122—Quinacridone Magenta and PV19—Quinacridone Violet.
