Not the same as ordinary turpentine, Shiva Rectified Turpentine is double distilled and highly refined to properly reduce the consistency and improve the flow of artist's oil colors.

Never buy any liquids in block cans again
By Gladys Kravitz
from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania
I just bought this in the store in Philadelphia, and the product is average, which is good. I will buy it again when it is time to restock, but I don't like the block-can container. My complain is not of just Shiva but of all other makers that sell their artist liquid stored in block-cans. They're awful when you try to pour the medium into another container without spilling. What a waste when it happens. I just bought a block-can of Shiva Rectified Turpentine, and, ARGH, it was frustrating to pour without waste. I used a turkey baster to transfer the turpentine from the block can into a jar for use.I wish ALL makers of artist liquid medium will transition to the bottle shaped container which makes it easy to pour without waste. When I restock again, I will be avoiding the block-cans, and buying only turpentine or any other medium in regular bottle-shaped containers because they are easier and safer to pour.

Best turps out there
By Patrick Bryant Hawley
from Chattanooga, Tennessee
Best turps I've ever used based on odor alone. Mineral spirits have a sickly, bitter stink; standard turpentine is reeking, sour, and acrid. This stuff smells like flowers. I shoot you not; I've been known to splash a little on my hands just to enjoy the fragrance. Consider that it is also a full-strength, non-yellowing solvent, and by god we're in bidness!
Best turpentine around.
from Roanoke, VA
Having used a myriad of other turpentines over the years, I can personally attest to the quality of this product. Never dulls the paint, smells wonderful, does the job.
Needed large volume - great choice
from Fort Worth, TX
This is a very good product in the size I needed. Pleasant aroma. My preference for initial oil painting lay in to establish drawing placement and values. Dries very fast plus using paper towel or cotton swab and the product I can lift out lights and on the Gamblin Oil Primer I use to prepare my canvases the is no staining.
That wonderful smell!

Just in case you were worried about getting some sour smelling big box turpentine smell stop worrying. This turpentine has that wonderful fresh x-mass tree smell.
Shiva/Richeson-- best turps to use
from Clarinda, Iowa
I'm a professional oil painter, and prefer to use turpentine as opposed to the alternative solvents. Shiva/Richeson Rectified Turpentine is the best, cleanest turps I've ever encountered, and the only type I'll use. It has a lower "fume factor" than other turps (I use an industrial air filter, but even that doesn't help with other types of turpentine), and works nicely for thinning paints as well as cleaning brushes. I've even shelved my plans to move back to California, because Shiva turps can't be sold there.
Works very well and smells awesome.
from Charleston, SC
I use this to make my medium in place of regular turpentine or mineral spirits. It smells really great, like balsam. I'm not sure what the other reviewer was talking about with the smell unless he just hates the smell of fir trees (think Christmas tree smell.) The smell doesn't matter as much as how it performs. Used in a medium with Stand Oil this creates a smooth mixture which is not harsh like mineral spirits. What I mean is, it blends well with paint without removing it from the canvas or drying too fast. It just works better than anything else. I use 1 part turp (this stuff), 1 part stand oil, and 2 parts linseed for a perfect medium. Not too shiny, not too thick.
