Shiva Casein is a milk-product based paint which may be thinned with water. An extremely versatile medium, caseins may be applied in any manner, from impasto to thin watercolor washes. They are water soluble, but become insoluble with time and exposure.
Caseins dry quickly to a natural matte finish, making them unexcelled for reproduction. They can also be brought to a satin sheen simply by buffing with a soft cloth. If a gloss finish is desired, casein paintings can be varnished.
Caseins can be used on most surfaces. Because of the inflexibility of the binder, they should not be applied to canvas in heavy impastos. Colors are brilliant, permanent, and intermixable.

I'm in love with casein!
from South Carolina
Comments about Shiva Casein Colors:
I am new to casein, having read a ton prior to trying. Water based without the need for solvents. Shiva colors are wonderful in depth and hue, easy to work with (I prefer oil painting brushes over acrylics for this medium) and mix very well. Blick's service and packing was great! I am very pleased, and will be ordering more Shiva in the future. I have heard interesting things about their half-black, and I wish I had ordered the bigger tube of the titanium white.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Work Fast because they Dry fast
By Mark Maritato HIstorical Art
from Danbury CT
I purchased a limited pallet of colors (About 6 tubes) on these paints because I wanted to give them a try. I find them an intriguing medium to work with because they have similar working properties to Gouache and somewhat to Oils but they dry super fast. I wanted to try experimenting with these as an under-painting for oils. I started out using these on a board which did not yield the best result I found, and I think this may have been my fault due to the type board I chose to start working with. However when I tried these on a canvas board that was formulated for water-media I got much better results. So as of this review the jury is still out with me as I have a lot more experimenting to do but I believe these paints do offer a lot of promise for future works.

I've never used casein's before. I do a lot of painting outside and when I travel so like to take a minimal set up and these + watercolors is perfect.

Bright intense colour. Like the speed in which you can work with it. Dries fast yet remains workable.

I used casein to make acrylics opaque but works great on it's own- very smooth.

I use this paint for oil underpainting as well as using the white in a mixed layering technique with oils. Works best on panel.

IT"S A YES FOR CASEIN!
After seeing the sparkling landscapes painted by Rob Kulas on Facebook, I decided casein was worth a try: fast-drying, water soluble, and costs about 1/5 to 1/10 the price of oil paint, depending on what oil brand you use. What a discovery! Casein is a great all-around paint. Right now I am using it for mixed media preparatory studies, but I can already see it's going to take me a lot farther than that. I highly recommend you try casein[ you'll like it, as the cliche goes--it's true! Thank you Mr. Richeson!!!!
