BEWARE.... This is not as good as it used to be.
By Mike the artist
from Asheville NC
Comments about Sennelier India Ink:
I've used many different india inks over the years and all of them have been very charcoal grey at best. I then used Sennelier india ink and it was pure opaque black, one cover was all i needed... That has changed when I purchased my latest batch of india ink from Sennelier. They have watered the india ink down. It is incredibly obvious and I am upset because my artwork is somewhat ruined because of this. I relied on their usual formula and it is simply not the same. The price remains the same. Charge me more, just give me what I expect. The only thing I am expecting now is to have to start my art project all over from the start.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

A warm black drawing ink without too much shellac.
from Washington, DC
I recently compared drawing inks from Higgins, Pelikan, Yasutomo, J. Herbin, Hax, and Sennelier. I made swatches on wet and dry watercolor paper. Sennelier Encre de Chine is a slightly warm black, like vine charcoal rather than pure carbon. It feathers well on wet paper with no pigment separation. When dry there is little shellac sheen. It flows very well from dip pens and brushes with no feathering or blobbing. I keep it in an inkwell for convenience, and it keeps very well. An excellent multi-purpose drawing ink with consistent color and handling. It dries quickly and is permanently waterproof.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

One of the better inks
from Rindge New Hampshire
Of the black India inks offered by Dick Blick, this is my favorite. Rich black not prone to smearing or fading when the eraser makes contact with it. Inking with sub-grade materials is an awful chore and one is inclined to blame themselves for the poor results from inferior products. Don't use poor materials, they only lead to heartbreak. I wish that Dick Blick would carry a full line of Deleter pen nibs as I find them to be the best.

I expected better
from Los Angeles
I bought a large bottle for use with dip pens and brush work in mixed media and am really disappointed. I want nice solid black lines and I get medium dark to a gray wash. I have shaken the bottle for a long time in case it was old and has separation, but it's just not black. I don't like the flow from my pens. I am old enough to remember what India ink used to be like and it wasn't like this! I remember rich crisp lines that dried with a luster, and high workability; probably I was using Koh-I-Noor. I will try leaving the cap off as suggested in another review, but I sense the same overall cheapening of product and disregard for quality and suitabitlity for the consumer's end use that is evident in most products generated today, art or otherwise. I ended up using Golden Bone Black liquid acrylic thinned with a little airbrush medium to get the results I was looking for.

India Ink as a wood stain
from Sioux City, Iowa
My purpose for the purchase was to utilize the India ink as a stain to finish a furniture project. I appy the ink to raw wood after sanding and grain raising and then clear coat the ink with sprayed lacquer.

Rich Dark Black... NICE!!
I'm new to inking and I've been trying out all kinds of inks. I was getting disappointed even with well known INKs. After comparing this to several other popular black inks(I don't want to name any)... this ink is significantly darker and more impressive than the others.1 coat leaves an impressive matt finish. While 2 coats will leave a slight gloss in some areas.I am using it for scripture, so for me it is inexpensive enough to use all the time. If that is not the case for you I would use less expensive ink for rough drafts... and then use this on final drafts.I am using very fine 1-2 sized water color brushes. This INK is thicker and clumps more quickly than other inks. I have to rinse my brush maybe once an hour. But, the end result is worth it.

from Murray, KY
I am a woodworker (coffin maker, to be exact)and have been using wood and leather dyes to ebonize wood. The dyes were sloppy to use and didn't cover evenly. This time, I tried Sennelier India Ink and was pleasantly surprised at how evenly it went on even when thinned with water. Using a small paint roller, there was almost no waste and no splatter. It took about 10 ounces to cover a full-sized coffin. The excellent coverage and evenness helps to make up for the high price of the product.

Beautiful, Deep Black Calligraphy Ink
By I Heart Calligraphy
from San Diego, CA
I do Calligraphy professionally, and have used a variety of blacks. This ink is gorgeous, deep, and best of all, it dries quickly. The result is the blackest black, with a slightly matte finish. This is becoming my standard for most projects, but keep in mind, you can't use it in fountain pens.
