Bright, clear colors

Comments about Sennelier French Artists' Watercolor Sets:
This is a great, compact set that will be very useful for color studies outside. The colors flow on very intense. This set came with an additional 6 colors which were needed as they contained the browns. I would give this a perfect rating, but the half pan colors are small and I'm sure I'm going to run out of some colors quickly, plus it's easy to slop from one color onto the next. But, overall a very fine set.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Sennelier Nesting Box Set Wonderful
from Russellville, Arkansas
I splurged and bought the 24 color Nesting Set after the holidays because I'd been seriously tempted throughout. I belong to the Society for Creative Anachronism and go to many medieval recreation events with the SCA. Not only my garb but my camp stuff and gear are constantly being upgraded to look more period - if not specifically, documentably medieval at least something that could be reasonably considered so. Wooden box sets for painting and illumination are very prized and popular. So when I saw this, I had to give it a try.The color of the wood is lovely, a rich rosewood sort of finish. The little hardware on the top box is a dark metal and very period looking. It'd probably pass muster for Civil War recreations too, and it also has a great elegance for setting out in formal living rooms among traditional furnishings. The strap that holds the boxes together is well made and sturdy, webbing fastened with velcro. While I plan to replace it with a leather strip and metal buckle for SCA events, I'll keep that good webbing strap aside for when I'm not at an event because it's easy to open and convenient. The colors in the 24 color set are as well chosen as those in the 8 Mini that I started with. Plenty of choices for transparency/opacity, warm or cool versions of primaries, well chosen greens and violets and neutrals. It's a little quirky compared to other brands and the reds are fabulous. They vary quite a bit and include fluorescent Opera Rose, something that can give extra brightness as a glaze or even a main element. Lightfastness varies, as is usual for artist grade paints, so I kept the paper wrappers and noted it in my chart. All of the colors have good strong pigment load, smooth solubility and ease of pickup. I haven't tried their tube watercolors but trust those to be as good. The porcelain palette is good and solid, packed with foam under it and next to it. I kept it in its deep box with that foam padding since that protects it so well. The middle box only has the folded napkin in it, a small cloth embroidered with Sennelier on it. That might be handy for cleaning out the palette but doesn't fill its layer, so that middle box is good for my metallic gouache, kneaded eraser, maybe a small ruler, pencil sharpener, all those other handy oddments that accumulate. I might add dip pens and very short flat ink bottles as well later, there is extra space within the set for your added supplies of choice.Aside from medieval recreation, a set like this is something that won't disturb the ambience of a formal living room. I can easily imagine it set out on a coffee table with traditional furnishings and perhaps a bound journal or leather folder with paper. It would make a good object in a still life setup - and wouldn't take much to move the colors and tools in use out of it during that painting either.

I never had the opportunity to work with Sennelier paints before now, mostly due to the cost but I have learned that it is well worth it. I have used everything from Windsor Newton to Reeves and Utrecht, you name it- but never Sennelier. These are by far the highest quality paints I have EVER used- I purchased the 24 half pan set- they're my new prized possession. The pigment is so rich and vibrant. The consistency is just... luxurious. They layer incredibly well without washing the previously laid colors out. Overall, they can really only be described as magical.
the colors are brilliant and the paint is super smooththe color intensity surprised me. wow
I did buy it again.

Use this set all the time to do small demonstration watercolors for my class. I am able to obtain rich, luminous colors and have done some larger paintings which have been in national juried shows using these little cake colors exclusively. They last longer than one might expect.

Surprisingly versatile red!
By Robert Sloan
I lucked and got a bargain price on the Sennelier Mini eight color pocket watercolor set. It intrigued me for its size and since I liked Sennelier soft pastels, I decided to have a go. Wow! The only thing that disturbed me was that it has only one red, it looked like an orange-red. I usually like to also have a purple cast red, extra points if it's not genuine Alizarin and so lightfast. Well! I had the happy surprise that French Vermilion behaves a lot like Quinacridone Coral. It has enough cool undertones that it will bring out a lovely violet with either Cinereous Blue or Ultramarine. With that, the little set was wonderful. Color's strong, it picks up easily, the Sap Green has a gorgeous hue and the bright light yellow green is very strong. The single yellow isn't so orange cast that it won't make bright greens, it's just a good primary yellow. Best of all, Burnt Umber and Paynes Grey for darkeners mean I'm not limited to Ivory Black, having warm and cool darks in mixing helps me a lot.The quality of the pan watercolors is excellent. I'm now interested in getting a larger set, but that little box fits in my shirt pocket and is getting some good use!

brilliant color provides a wide range of tints
from Elkhart, IN USA
Strong, brilliant color comes off the pan easily, probably due to the paint's honey content. I see much the same effect with M. Graham watercolors, which also incorporate honey. Because the color is strong they dilute to a wide range of tints as you add more water. You can easily go from strong, dark tones to light, effervescent tints with almost any of the colors. This is going to be an excellent set for plain air painting next spring when the temperatures and light graduate from our cold gloomy winter! This is my first metal paint box and having something that was not made of plastic was a strong incentive toward buying this set. My plastic palettes always stain after a while and it was irritating me quite a bit. I'm hoping that this coated metal box stays clean. That said, there are too many colors in this set for my taste. This was the 12 color set plus 6 additional 'free' colors. That's too many for my tiny aging brain to deal with and, to be honest, there are a couple of colors for which my own personal taste says 'ick'. I have no need for black, for example, and it's going to be replaced by Windsor & Newton's gorgeous Transparent Yellow before we exit our cozy cave into the real world. I'll get it down to 12 at some point and then I'll be happy. Probably. For a while. ;)Mike

Comes with quality brushes, and a porcelain mixing tray. The color selection of the half pans is both generous and highly useful. Unlike other sets I've purchased, this set does not contain colors I typically won't use; like Chinese white. The wooden case has a durable nylon strap with a Velcro tab to close. Great to use in the field or on vacation trips. You will need a water supply for field use; possibly brushes with their own water reservoir. Colors are rich and vibrant. Great deal when purchased on sale from Dick Blick. Ordered with regular shipping and received within a week in perfect condition.
Excellent mix of paints! All my favorites are there. Its beautiful, and easy to carry. All you need is a cup of water.
Convenient and Great Selection of Colors
from Midsouth, USA
I have the black metal case set of pan colors. The set has a fabulous selection of colors. And I was amazed to be able to fit a selection of brushes and a pencil inside the box with the paints and it still closes securely! This came in very handy today when we had a few hours of sunshine and warmer temperatures and I needed a set of paints I could grab and get out in a hurry to take advantage of the nice weather for some plein air work.I have no complaints at all about Sennelier paints. Great set!
A stunning glimpse into the making of Sennelier L'Aquarelle, Honey Based Artists' Watercolor. Continuing its traditional color palette used by French Impressionist painters, Sennelier has now expanded the Sennelier Artists' Watercolor line to 98 colors to include more rich darks.
