Scratch-Brite Gold and Silver Scratchboards consist of a shiny silver- or gold-colored foil laminated to a heavy board base. These scratchboards can be scored with scratch art tools to create dramatic effects. Scratch-Brite boards will withstand deep scratching.
Each board measures 8½" × 11" (22 cm × 28 cm) and comes in a pre-inked black.

Great for students!
from Warren tx
This scratchboard is great for students... we order this in silver every year and my middle school kids do great with it. Scratches off easily with tools but not so easily that it's rubbed off when stacking them for storage.

Scratch-Art Scratchboards are perfect for students of ages 7th grade and above. Even my high schoolers enjoy working with scratchboard! My tips are:1. Make sure your metal scratch tools are very sharp. You can purchase new ones or these can be sharpened, one year I gave the assignment and realized that these do dull over time, maybe after 3 to 4 sctrachboards. I had to use a sharpening stone to sharpen them, and it worked!2. Have students draw a basic outline on copy paper, use transfer paper (or have students color one side of a paper with 6B) and transfer the basic image to the scratchboard. Then start sctraching!3. I must tell them 100 times... "do not outline!"
Sheen not what expected, but nice produc
By Mom of artist
We had bought scratch board with white backing from a different store last year and needed some silver to complete a layered project. Unfortunately, the silver backed scratch board had a matte sheen rather than a glossy sheen, so they didn't match as well as we would have liked. But, we were able to spray a glossy finish over the scratch board to make it work. Over all we were happy with the product. Nice weight to the product, too.
If you are considering buying silver boards for use with wooden styluses, please understand that they will not dig through the black surface. This was a complete waste of money for me, as my art program is on an extremely limited budget. Perhaps one would have more luck with one of the other color options, but the silver boards did nothing with the wood tools.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Love this stuff- have used it for years!
from Cumberland MD
I have used this product -silver- for a 4th grade Chinese Dragon project and with 6th grade for an Egyptian using the gold. I have never had a problem in the 10 years that I have used this product. I do use the metal scratch knives that may be sharpened with wet/dry sanpaper when they get dull. I have the students do a small 2" square piece to practice and make sure they are holding the tool correctly and not "digging in" to the paper.
"Scratchboard not what it used to be"
from Madison Heights, Michigan
Over the past (5) years I have purchased many packages of Scratch-Brite Gold scratchboard. I was extremely disappointed to find that the gold foil underlay is made of a different material. It is impossible to work with. I had been able to produce very detailed clock faces using a pointed scratch tool, as well as a flat tool which left a mirrored gold finish. Because of the new and dull gold texture of the board, I am no longer able to use it. Is the other type of gold Scratchboard still available.

I disagree with the previous reviewer. I have the metal scratch knives and many of my students were actually happier and got better results using the pointed wooden sticks. The gold was beautiful for pattern/texture projects in the style of Klimt. To each his own.
Need metal tools to work with
By Miss Jean
from Waxhaw, NC
Purchased a variety of scratch papers to work with in classrooms. The sparkly and the black and white were excellent with the wooden (inexpensive) tools. However, the silver did not work with the wooden tools. The metal kits for tooling are cost prohibitive in our classrooms -- so the silver paper was a waste.

silver is better than gold!
from melbourne, fl
The silver scratchboard is great for minute detail and precise pen and ink techniques. Professionals may be quite delighted with this type of scratchboard.I prefer this to the the white clay-based scratchboards. I'm not fond of the gold scratchboard because it's dull in color and the only subject worth scratching out is King Tut's mask. It's limiting whereas the silver is not.
