Schmincke Horadam Gouache is more than just opaque watercolor. Since no white is added to Horadam Gouche to artifically boost its covering power, it can create crisp color blends like no other gouache. Of the 48 colors, all but 8 are based on a single pigment.
Like Horadam Watercolors, colors thin with water and are easily rewetted if left to dry on the palette. Horadam Gouache is so finely ground, it can even be used for 0.15 mm airbrush work.
Many other brands of gouache are "designer" gouaches, with an emphasis on accurate pre-mixed colors for use by the designer. By contrast, Horadam is a "fine artist" gouache, with an emphsis on providing the classic range of pigments as pure, single-pigment colors.

First time to gouache
By Art Student

Comments about Schmincke Horadam Artist Gouache:
I decided to buy gouache for my trip to Yosemite! It was rewettable and though it would have been nice to buy more tubes, I just bought small containers from Artist Loft with a snap on lid and mixed my paints to make more shades. It was very easy to use because the paints in the containers did not dry for weeks. I am excited to use these again when my friend and I go pleinair painting. I also read before purchasing gouache that a lot of oil painters use this and I can see why. When you layer paint ontop of a dry layer, it reactivates it and combines the different colors together. But since I still have trouble painting in this style, my colors appear a bit dull. I'm sure I'll get used to this soon.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Just slightly better than average
By Napa Artist
from My Studio
I had such high expectations from Schmincke's Horadam line of superior gouache that I went ahead and purchased 17 tubes to ensure I had a broad spectrum of colors to work with from the get-go in both opaque and semi-opaque hues. While the titanium white and the cadmium colors were quite exceptional in both their paint handling, flow and opacity, other colors labeled "opaque" simply lacked the covering power and vividness I was expecting. Flow and handling of several colors were uneven (streaky), and the application of broad, flat uniform areas of color were sometimes difficult to attain. I found Holbein's gouache far easier to handle for that manner of application. What I do like about this line is that many of the colors are composed of single pigments with no opacifiers or fillers added to the paint (as in most gouache paints) resulting in cleaner color mixtures. The color shift from wet to dry is also less noticeable due to this line's higher pigment load. I did have one of the colors harden inside the tube which Blick's excellent customer service already promised to replace. If you're contemplating trying this paint out, I would recommend the following opaque colors initially for their covering power and ease of handling: Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Ultramarine Blue, English Red, Vandyke Brown and Titanium White. Then go from there. All in all, while I typically rely on Schmincke to deliver a superior product such as their Mussini line of oil paints or their Horadam Aquarell line of watercolors, both of which I love, I can only give their line of gouache a slightly better-than-average rating given some of the issues I've mentioned above, and also considering that this is probably the most expensive line of gouache on the planet today. If you're just looking for "better-than-average gouache", there are definitely cheaper alternatives out there that comes very close in quality to this one (Holbein Artists' gouache comes to mind, and they do have single-pigment colors if that is what you want).

Schmincke Gouache is Best Gouache
from Seattle, WA
Schmincke makes great paint products. The gouache is a wonderful consistency and great colors and pigmentation. They are a bit expensive, but worth it for some of those irresistable colors. PBr24 is one of my favorites and I've only found it in Schmincke. The only thing I don't like is their deceptive mixes - raw umber is a mix of PBr7, PY42, and PBk11. It's a nice color but doesn't mix well when you're expecting a single pigment.

Schmincke Horodam Gouache is superb
from Potomac, MD
I do illuminated manuscripts on calfskin vellum, and brilliant, dense color is essential for my work. Schmincke Horodam, in particular, and Linel are almost the only gouache that I use -- it makes almost all shades in the other, more commonly available brands look and feel like sidewalk chalk. For years I had to buy this stuff in London and Paris, before it was carried in the US, and it is a blessing to be able to get it from Blick at a reasonable price.
Amazing pigment load
I use these for calligraphy. For watercolors, I haven't run across another brand that has the same pigment load that allows for shading and color intensity once it gets watered down enough to use in a nib as ink.I haven't seen a down side of this yet, other than the price means it takes me much longer to fill a full color palette of tubes than it ever did for other brands.

Best quality gouache
High pigment concentration with no opacity additives. Good rewetable qualities. A high quality product. Once I used it I use no other.

Intense pigment and easy activation
from Dallas, TX
The price matches the quality. You are most definitely getting what you pay for. It is pigment heavy and applies beautifully. I like to place my gouache into a palette an dry so that i may use again at a later date. This brand reactivates without issue. I tend to buy this brand for my my base primary pigments to mix other colors. (ex. cadmium red/yellow and dark blue indigo). I do no have deep pockets so I only buy these for colors i know I need to rely on but if I did I would buy all of them for my palette.
