Welcome to dickblick
Sculpt-It is ideal for freehand modeling and creating realistic sculptures. No kiln or heat baking is required. It is non-toxic, ideal for children who are old enough to work with modeling or polymer clays.
It dries to an almost ceramic hard surface with minimal shrinkage, and can be moistened while pliable for piece-to-piece adhesion, smoothing, and blending to avoid cracking. Paint the finished piece when it is dry, or leave it unpainted for that natural look.

My favorite store
from New Orleans
Comments about Sargent Art Sculpt-It Air-Hardening Clay:
Dick Blick is my favorite store. My orders are always completed in a timely manor...website is user friendly...customer support very helpful and polite. Just wonderful. The product in this review is one I use consistently for my art. Scultp it. I use other clays I prefer...this one is great if you like cracks in your pieces...sometimes I do...mostly I prefer a higher quality clay.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

It cracks easily.
I really,really like this stuff!
By Rockies Girl
I've used other air dry clays and threw away my last order (different product) because it cracked like crazy. This has been great so far. It dries fast, but I have a spray bottle of water that I spritz it with if its getting too dry while I work. The only thing that would make me happier with it, would be a lower price. But all the air dry clays seem pretty expensive. I don't think I would recommend this for kids because it isn't real forgiving if you handle it roughly while sculpting. So if you are used to play dough-like clays that you can manipulate for a fairly long time, this wouldn't be for you. Makes beautiful, realistic flowers - best I've found to date.

Convenient packs for the classroom prevents wasting of the product. Better for small scale character parts or sculptures. CAn color small amounts prior to use.

STOP NOW! Don't waste your money.
By Megan the Art Teacher

I have used this with ages k-6 with horrible results. The clay OFTEN is totally dry when I open the container. I complained to Sargent about this and they were happy to send me replacements, which were also dry! The kids get frustrated by how quickly the clay drys. It doesn't stick well, even when we use a bit of water. My suggestion...DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Ok but not that great.
from mitchellville, MD
I thought the difficulty with this stemmed from my own inexperience. But as it turns out, teachers apparently also had a problem with this too. It's false advertising on the bucket to say it doesn't shrink after drying. It does and it cracks too. People also say thick things take days to weeks to dry and even then may not. What I do is set it out in one position for 24 hours then the next day flip it over exposing the other side to air and it dries in 2 days time. I thought it was a great bargain at first but now idk if I'm going to buy this again or not.

Best product for art!!!
from Chicago, IL
This product is not really hard to use, in order for this clay to do not dry out is to use/mix with a little bit o lotion, do not use water!!!, the clay can be mix with paint before use, but only use acrylic paint, do not use oil. let is sit one day for better dry, if you have any left over, you can put in a plastic zip bag, so you can use it again, if you paint it and want to reuse, it will dry after 2 weeks, so use it before 2 weeks for a better result.

Not as bad as it seems
from Pharr, Texas
I bought a 2lbs container of this product last year and have done over 100 phone charms and earrings with it. Only had about 2 pieces get cracks but that was because I didn't mold it enough or add enough water when blending it. I used Tempera paints to paint it and then added sculpey satin glaze for a shinny effect. I would recommend it to anyone but would Also recommend reading instructions and tutorials on using this product. Don't add too much water and don't let it dry up if you aren't done. When finished it takes a day to fully dry depending on the size. I turn mine over every few hours to allow even drying or hang them. The only thing I would do different with this is buy a paint sealer to apply before adding glaze some people don't take care of them and end up peeling some of the color off. My own collections are in perfect condition and over a year old. For small projects its perfect.
not as advertised
from little rock,ar.
I wish I had read these reviews before I used this stuff. I am doing a wood carving of a life size heron. I made the legs from 1/2" steel rod and the toes from 1/4" rod. I started out using bondo to coat the legs before rasping and sanding to finish. Cannot apply and form bondo with hands so I found this product at local art store(hobby lobby). The label on bucket reads will not shrink or crack. I did not apply more than 1/4" thick but 2 weeks later and its still cracking. I filled the cracks with more sculpit and it also has cracked. Now I'm filling the cracks with wood filler and if this does not work I will have to grind all of this stuff off and start all over. Bondo is hard to work with but can be filed and sanded after a few hours. I have been over 2 weeks working with this stuff. They should offer a full refund for false advertising. I was forced to give it one star.
