Imagine the freedom to paint just about anywhere! Cobra Water Mixable Oils are artist-quality oil paints that offer the freedom to paint indoors or outdoors, in studios, at academies, or in your living room. Painting with Cobra is the same as painting with traditional oil paints — however, you can mix the paints with water and no solvents are required.

Cobra paints can be applied using traditional oil painting techniques with no visible changes during the drying process — colors, brushstrokes, and applied textures remain unchanged after the paint has dried. They work well with brushes, painting knives, rollers, sponges, and more.

Cobra's versatility of application allows them to be used for creating opaque and transparent layers, watercolor wash techniques, alla prima, and glazing techniques. The colors offer a uniform degree of sheen and uniform drying time across the range.

The range consists of 70 transparent, semi-transparent, semi-opaque, and opaque colors that are highly lightfast, including 35 made from a single pigment. Ten colors are based on highly exclusive pigments, such as Cadmiums, Cobalts, and Chromium Oxides, as well as an exceptionally transparent Oxide Red and Oxide Yellow. Because Cobra oil colors offer the highest degree of lightfastness, the original colors will remain unchanged for at least 100 years under museum conditions.

During the grinding process, the high-quality Cobra pigments and oil are pulverized in a triple-roll mill until artist-quality fineness has been achieved.

Because Cobra Oils mix with water and don't require the use of toxic solvents, using them protects your health and the environment. Equipment and hands clean up easily with soap and water.

It is difficult not to place this one right along side of the Holbein Duo Water Mixables as "BEST IN CATAGORY" as I did in my review on the Duos.
They share all the positive properties of the Holbein paints: The buttery feel, larger tube size, Great color range, etc., and unlike their competitors in this catagory, they do not become stiff in the tube and difficult to squeeze out over time! This is especially true of the yellow hues in the Wndsor and Newton line of "Water Mixables"
The only reason for the Royal Talens "Cobra" coming in a close second to the Holbeins is that they do not offer as large a range of colors. Otherwise, they are interchangeable and I use them both happily!

First off, I want to say how much I love Dick Blick's website. Excellent website, excellent service, great products at a great price. I'm Canadian and even with shipping costs I STILL get a much better price than if I buy local. Everything is much more expensive in Canada. When I receive my orders they come quickly and nicely packaged.

Now, lets talk paint. I am a beginner so I have not used much for paint. I struggled with whether I was going to paint with acrylics or oil. I like the easy clean up of acrylics. Oils are a pain to clean up and toxic. But, acrylics dry way too fast even with extenders and that makes blending nearly impossible. I thought I'd give Cobra Water Mixable paint a try and I immediately loved them. They are creamy and are a joy to paint with. So easy to clean up with soap and water and hardly have any order. The medium used with the paint has a very slight smell but nothing like regular oils. I would definitely recommend this brand and using water mixable oils fits my requirements in a paint. Thank you!

I've just started testing them, but so far, so good! I like the consistency a lot. The first generation of water soluble oils where so sticky! These are nice and buttery. I've only tried a limited color palette (sample), so need to do a bit more testing before I switch over, but I would sure love to drop mineral spirits/solvents from my studio.

I love Cobra paints, they can be thinned with water just like traditional oil paints can be thinned with turpentine, unlike other brands which recommend against thinning and painting with water. These rinse off easily in my water cup between colors. I love being able to do watercolor like effects.

And the painting paste, is amazing, it is like clear oil paint, I can mix it with my colors to make them more transparent while retaining their creamy texture.

Some people like their paint stiff, others like it buttery, I like mine creamy and Cobra delivers for my preference!

Someone else mentioned the colors getting a little dull when they dry, I just wanted to give that person a tip, if any part of your oil painting gets sunk in, or loses some of its luster, you can use a technique called oiling out that will make it shiny again, I recommend looking it up.

My only concern is with the paint tubes, they aren't very durable, and I hope Cobra can make a more durable tube for them in the near future. In the meantime I just try to be careful with them and tape them up if they get damaged.

This is just an update. I am still using Cobra Oils, and continue to like them.

My update is this: I had been using Royal Talens H2Oil before, and like everyone else who commented, assumed that their new Cobra was better (even 'though I loved H2Oil) but I actually did a side by side comparison with both (single pigments py154, pb 15, pb 29) and actually could tell almost no difference.

This confirms two things for me....one, H2Oil was fine, and two, single pigment paints stand up well even in student grades.

Anyway, I would recommend H2Oil or Cobra, I like them both.

After the H20ils were discontinued I bounced around from brand to brand. First I went to Grumbacher and liked those until several months went by and I went to open the perylene maroon and it was so hard I had to throw it away. The Max seem to harden in the tubes for some reason, and I really don't like using a medium every time I paint. When I went to open my Cobra paints they still flowed right from the tube. I just love the consistency of being able to squirt and paint without needing messy mediums, but that's just me. The Holbein is my second choice and they have a really nice range of colors. Also, the Cobra dry the fastest for me. I think they are made with a different type of oil than the other brands.
Anyway, I hope this helps.
