The Rotring Rapidograph technical pen has a prefilled, disposable, capillary ink cartridge which offers a significant improvement over other technical pens in the single most troublesome area — consistent ink flow.

Virtually no maintenance is required because the ink reservoir and the breathing system are one piece. This means that each time you replace the ink cartridge, the pen gets a complete new pressure equalization system, and you get instant ink flow without leaks or blobs until the cartridge is empty.

Each pen is fully equipped with one cartridge, a stainless steel drawing point, and a color-coded barrel and cap with double seal and clip. It's refillable with cartridges only.

The only thing wrong with the Rotring line of Rapiographs is that the company has decided to discontinue selling them in the USA. Look, I know our country has made some mistakes but I don't believe that depriving us of the best technical pen is the right way to cure the problem.
About the pen: I can change ink cartridges without making a mess. They never clog--ok, I left one unused for 4 years and did have to clean out the vent hole in the cartridge. The ink flows smoothly--when it doesn't, the problem usually is that it is out of ink!
I have had 4 other brands of technical pens. This is the one I have been using for a decade and will not willingly go back to any other.

I use them for illustration. I've used the Koh-I-Noors, the Staedler's, and the Rotrings. The Rotrings are the best -- they aren't flawless: they still can free flow, and they're hard to clean, and they will dry out if stored for too long. But they have the largest reservoir, and have the most consistent quality. The price has tripled in recent years.

This pen hasn't clogged and gives consistent line every time. It must be the sealed cartridge system. If you're looking for a quality rapidograph, this is the one to get. The only problem seems to be stocking the cartridge refills.

I recently purchased the .13, .18 and .25mm Rotring Rapidograph pens. They have exceeded my expectations. The ink is free flowing and does not clog. I also have the koh-i-noor technicals pens, and have found that they clog easily in the smaller nib sizes. But the Rotring pens do not. Blick is also the best art supply store that I have used, whether it is local or mail order. Their service is second to none and their product offering is extensive and prices are very competitive. I buy as much as I can from Blick and will continue to do so.

I find these pens really great to use-they give a nice constant line, but be very careful of the point. I've bent two by not being diligent enough when putting the caps back on and the replacement points are VERY expensive.

I have been a fan of technical pens for a long time, and use them for fine detail drawing and writing. Of the many brands and styles that I have owned nothing compares to the Rapidograph. It gives a smooth line without flaw, and is much less likely to jam or need cleaning than any other I have used. I highly recommend it.
