Akua Intaglio soy-based permanent inks are a non-toxic, environmentally safe way to do printmaking.

Formatted for intaglio, they can also be applied with a brayer for relief, monotype, and collagraph printmaking techniques. Combine Akua Intaglio Ink with Solarplate for a completely waterbased intaglio process.

Akua ink has a rich, thick consistency with minimal dryer and cleans up easily with soap and water.

Print from plastic, wood, linoleum, or metal plates. You don’t need any special ventilation, toxic solvents, or fireproof containers.

8-Color Sampler Pack — Colors include Hansa Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Crimson Red, Red Oxide, Carbon Black, Titanium White, Phthalo Green, and Phthalo Blue. Jars are 59 ml (2 oz).

Metallic Gold and Silver Inks — Use Akua Intaglio Metallic Gold and Silver Inks when you want to add high shine or a subtle sheen. They’re ideal for monotype, intaglio, and relief printmaking. The metallic colors will appear different depending on the viewing angle. They can be used alone or mixed with other Akua Intaglio or Akua Kolors to create copper, bronze, and other new colors. A small amount added to the ink will increase the opacity without causing a shiny effect.

Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.

This product works great until it expires. And when it expires it turns into a runny liquid rather than the thick gel that intaglio ink should be. Its hard to tell when it will go bad-- I bought a "fresh" jar a few months ago that had the right consistancy when I bought it and 2 months later its like fluid paint. Buyer beware.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This product is versatile and an excellent choice for a printmaking studio with little ventilation. I use it in the classroom for monoprint, collograph, relief printing and intaglio. There is an excellent selection of pigment rich colors. Two reasons to use this product are its extended open time--it sets by being absorbed by the paper and the absolute ease and speed of clean up. I am happy to be able to offer a safe printmaking environment to my high school students, thanks in a large part to these inks.

My students used the Akua Intaglio Carbon Black ink to create fantastic monoprints. I learned of this product at an Art Educators workshop and it was very easy to use and clean-up, which always the most challenging part of a project.

I've used Speedball, Daniel Smith, and Graphic Chemical brands in the past- this was my first time buying and using Akua.

Here's my review:

Pros:

-Environmentally safe!
-SUPER easy to clean up- sometimes just water will do- don't even need soap. Sometimes I don't even need water, just a rag! Wow!
-Prints great without a press, especially if modifier is added (compared to other brands I've tried)
-Modifier added to the Intaglio inks make them awesome as monotype inks- super smooth.
-Great resources available on the Akua website, and on the Safer Printmaking DVD also sold by Blick(I highly recommend it!)

Downsides:
-To print an opaque color, you need to roll up the plate a few times, so you use more ink than you would with other brands. If you work big and/or are on a budget, this could stink-!

And a note on personal preference:
-Akua inks don't seem to print as "glossy" as DS or GC inks. They have more of a matte finish, not as lustrous. I've only used the yellow ochre, Pthalo green and Carbon black- maybe other hues are different.

All in all, I highly recommend these inks! Great stuff, thanks Akua and Dick Blick.

I love the new colors I purchased. The yellow is delightful, the blue is gorgeous, the red is yummy, the gold I am learning how to work with so that it comes out gold. I did find the red extraordinarily difficult to stir to a smooth consistency when I first opened it. This happened with the yellow during my initial purchase some time ago. Wondering what causes that. My students thought perhaps those colors had been sitting on the shelf too long.

I use these inks for press-less relief printing and they are AMAZING. Clean up is a breeze with no worries about chemicals- just a little baby oil and simple green!! colors are vibrant; mix and roll well.

These inks are great for monotype and etching. Vibrant colors, excellent viscosity, and ideal for making monotypes at home without a press. No need to wet the paper when printing (Arches 88 is ideal). Terrific product, good prices at Dick Blick.
