Comments about Robert Ware Children's Velcro Art Smock:
The previous art teacher at my school purchased these within the last 2 years. I probably would have purchased them too, but I would have sent them back. The purpose of an art smock is to protect your clothing and this smock fails at this. Our students wear uniforms and parents are rightfully frustrated when their overpriced uniforms get stained during art class. And this happens all the time with these art smocks because the cut of the neck in front is a very deep cut. This neckline doesn't fit a single one of my students and these smocks are not adjustable. Also, as the above art teacher reviewed, several of the velcro pieces and straps with velcro attached have ripped off with gentle use. I can't tell you how many times parents have come complaining to me about the stains on their clothing. Many parents have purchased ponchos for their children to wear in my art room, instead of these. I will not buy these again due to durability and ineffectiveness and consequently would never recommend them either. Usually Dick Blick is excellent about refunding or crediting or sending replacements about disappointing art materials, but the last time I called about other items and didn't have a chanec to mention the art smocks, I was told their warranty only extends one year. Art programs are given too little money every year, so spending $$$ on art smocks that are this poorly designed and creating an expensive program loss double loss (1 loss on the original expense and a second loss on finding and purchasing a replacement) is very frustrating. If Dick Blick would like to replace or credit this purchase, I would be satisfied. I do purchase 90% of our art supplies from Dick Blick due to their selection, prices, and customer service. As far as recommending a different art smock, I'd suggest looking at science lab coats with long sleeves that will fully protect the sides, arms, colars, etc. of your little artists.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

the velcro straps just fall off!
By an art teacher
from San Francisco
I am an art teacher and bought 20 of these to use with my kindergarten-2nd graders. The Velcro is great because it takes way too long for children this age to tie the straps. The only problem is that within the first week, several of the Velcro straps on these smocks just fell off. Within a month, most of them have fallen off, a total pain! My students are very well behaved and they were not playing with the straps or tugging on them too much so I would conclude that they are sewn on poorly. I felt so upset about this I wanted to write Blick a letter and return them, but I am a very busy teacher. I got these to try to save time and energy for myself and it just made more work for me in the end. I do not recommend these!

I have two boys, ages 6 and 2. I ordered one of each size smock, hoping they would fit now, but okay with the idea that they might grow into them. The smaller smock can be placed on my little guy, but fits the 6 year old better. The larger smock can work on my older son, but will be better in few years. (We are short people: around 25th percentiles for height/50th for weight for the kids.)The smocks are just canvas, not vinyl/waterproof, but they seem more comfortable than anything plastic-y would be. I love this style of velcro fasteners--we're familiar with them from some Montessori classes, and it is wonderful that the children can fasten them by themselves. I haven't washed them yet, but they feel sturdy enough to hold up over time.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
