Welcome to dickblick
This is an economical, virtually air-tight palette that maintains a moist environment for partially used watercolors, oils, or acrylics for days, even weeks.
It is made of strong, clear plastic with an easy-to-use, trigger-release mechanism. Some solvents may cause the plastic surface to craze.
Each palette has a diameter of 11½" (29 cm). Additional accessories are available for purchase.
This palette is made of 1/8" thick acrylic plastic and is recommended for oil painting.
Disposable Mixing Sheet Pad
This palette paper is impervious to oil or water.
Made of lightweight plastic, these disposable plastic inserts have either 24 wells for watercolor painting, or six wells to hold round tempera cakes.
Wet these sponge strips and place them inside the Lock Box to keep paint from drying out and usable for weeks.

Finally a close to perfect palette
I wanted a circle/color-wheel palette in porcelain as they are easy to clean but very expensive. I also wanted a palette that could be used for any wet media. The Richeson Lock Box exceeds my expectations. My entire palette is Blick Artists' Acrylics except nickel azo yellow (py150) and bismuth yellow (py184)... if Blick offered better yellows I'd use them exclusively... but I arrange my paints on the Richeson Lock Box nicely with compliments on the opposite side, and I put a few convenience colors in the inner well which are not as deep, but it's nice to have them there. I love the replacement 24 well inserts; If my palette starts to get too messy and I can't get it as clean as I like, just toss in another insert and start like new.The exterior casing of the lock box is hard sturdy plastic. I love that the outer wells on the insert are deep and hold a lot of paint... I usually wet a thin piece of sponge that I cut out to fit the well, then put a piece of palette paper on that, then the paint... the lock box keeps the paint moist, but I prefer juicy paint in acrylic, so I do it this way, it keeps the paint very soft.I love that I can switch between acrylic, oil or watercolor... my palette colors are always in the same place... wonderfully simple ... the disposable sheets for mixing are nice as I can save mixes for a few days. The Richeson lock box is the near perfect modular palette, with an airtight easily removed lid.Suggested improvements: deeper inner wells, a slightly higher lid design to keep the inner-well paints from touching the lid... There is a huge 3 inch or so circle in the middle of the lock box that houses the lid locking mechanism, but the lock only takes up about an inch of space... the inner wells could be deeper and wider to provide some mixing space rather than it being wasted.Insert improvements / ideas: mixing inserts for watercolor that have a rim to contain washes. Thanks Blick for making the Richeson Lock Box available... this palette has been around for along while... I'm only sorry that I didn't know about it until recently.. I know I'll be a long-time user and will buy more... in fact, I'm going to buy a few extra to keep on hand.

Best studio and traveling palette ever

I use my riches on lock boxes, yes boxes, for acrylic painting, along with the 24 well inserts. I have 1 just for my grey scale work and another for primary colors and a 3rd for all other mixes. They keep my paints fresh for weeks when properly maintained. They are great for mobility and traveling when painting either between studio set ups or on location work and are fairly strong and durable. The only things for the way I work that would make them better would be if the tops and bottoms interlocked for travel and when working in limited spaces. Although this is easily solved with a few good rubber bands. Also if it were available in a square or rectangular shape as well as the circular one and perhaps a few other sizes for traveling and packing purposes.

I have used this item for over fifteen years and unfortunately cracked the lid when packing it in the car. I was very happy to find it still available. I look forward to another decade or two with this useful tool.

I bought my Lock Box in the '80's and wore-out the palette liner. I was very pleased to find a replacement, and it was a great price.
