Nice set of pastels for starting out
from Minneapolis. MN
Comments about Richeson Handmade Half-Stick Soft Pastel Sets:
I am just learning to paint with pastels and I like working with these pastels. They are between Rembrandt and Great American for softness. That being said they work best as first or second layer on Mi-Teintes or similar paper. If you need more layers you will want to use a fixative, sanded paper, or a softer brand to go over the top. These are difficult to use on the final layers without some grit on the paper so you may want to try a sanded paper.I got the Richeson 120 set and one of the problems I have run into with these is all the colors are mid range values. There is a dire lack of dark colors and limited light colors. It makes using them on their own very difficult. At the same time I got these I picked up a set of 120 Rembrandt half sticks. I find myself reaching for the Rembrandts more often then I thought I would. They fill the gaps with darks, light colors and earth colors. The Rembrandts are more difficult to layer then the Richeson, but that works well for blocking in my dark under paintings.Where I run into troubles is the upper layers, when I need to work back in my dark colors, Richeson does not provide the same darks as the Rembrandts and once I get to the last layers I can't use the Rembrandts easly, I risk accidentally sgraffitoing my painting.I ended up getting a Great American landscape set to add to my palette so I can get the dark colors I need for later layers. I still like these, if I don't want to use my more expensive pastels but want to play around I feel better reaching for these then using my more expensive ones, they are a great confidence booster.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Bright and soft to complement my other pastels
from Geneseo, Illinois
An excellent, very soft pastel half stick. None have crumbled in my fingers. They blend and play well. If you visualize your scene, then these will replicate it with minimal effort. They are packaged very well for shipping purposes. But the packaging maybe somewhat bulky for taking on a trip/vacation. I'll make room for them as they are that nice to use. Spectacular results await you. I used some of them in painting the attached garden pepper.

Difficult to fine sanded pastel paper that works with so many different deals. Able to experiment and redo, if nessary.
Better than average but not as good as Terry Ludwig

A really good value. Nice colors and very soft. Not quite as creamy as the Ludwig, but a really good pastel for the money

Great blending perfect colors for expressionist paintings with pastels
from Asheville, NC
I am fairly new to this medium and have been collecting half-stick set of middle range priced brands while I practiced. I finally felt like it was time to try some of the better pastels and chose this set. The colors are lush and there is a large enough selection for me to have good choices. I do mostlt landscape and florals and this set was an excellent buy for me.
I'm fairly new to pastels and have been collecting a few kinds to decide which ones I like and need. I've tried a few mid-range priced brands and then treated myself to these Unisons. They are lush. This half-stick set gave me a good range of colors (I do mostly landscape and florals) and the price was good for the superior value.

cheap colors lacking richness
from hampstead, md
All of these colors are white tints of the colors they are attempting to emulate. If youre looking for anything legitimately rich or dark do yourself a favor and try another brand. A big disappointment!
