Welcome to dickblick
The texture of this uniquely lightweight and sturdy pastel board is like no other, achieved by applying a "sanded" pastel surface directly to Gator Foam, a rigid board that is virtually weightless. The result is a surface that is easy to transport — and able to be mounted as a finished work of art.
Apply pastels with ease — because of its toothy surface, Gator Foam will grab and hold the pigments layer after layer. It also works well with all water media without compromising the surface or the integrity of the board.
Archival and acid-free, Gator Foam is available in a variety of colors and sizes.

Comments about Richeson Gator Foam Premium Pastel Surfaces:
I did underpainting with pastel and water. That went well. The surface was a little rougher than I like, but the painting turned out well.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

My FAVORITE pastel surface
By Plein Air Gal
With the exception of one other pastel surface which is now unavailable, this is my favorite pastel ground. It holds multiple layers of pastel, is lightweight for plein air use, and I've discovered that certain colors release tiny mica-like sparkle when blending in a certain way. This is, hands down, my "go-to" pastel panel.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

It is okay
By Retired pastel beginner
It is okay but not as smooth a surface as ampersand pastel board. A little harder to get good coverage but the final picture turned out good.
Already mounted and toothy, comes in many colors and sizes

Excellent board and price
By Banjo's mom
Great for pastels paintings. Surface primed perfectly for pastels. I like this as well as my home made boards and cheaper and easier. Great value.

light weight but eats pastels for lunch.
from Casino, Australia
Very coarse surface that ate my pastels so quickly I almost didn't want to paint. Very hard to fill areas where you want to cover the colour of the board. This product would hold many many more layers than I was willing to put down. Not possible to use pastel pencils to any effect as no fine lines achievable due to coarseness. I will say that they finished product was very easy to frame and board as really light and sturdy. If you like very coarse papers this will suit you.

Not my taste
By The Pastel Master
from Windsor, ON
I found that this board was way too rough for my tastes and needs. I have used several sanded pastel surface, but this feels like a 200-grit sandpaper, where it is utterly impossible to obtain any detail. Plus, the price is way too high for materials that aren't anywhere near as expensive. I will not buy this ever again.

Fabulous pastel surface
By Plein Air Addict
from Santa Cruz, CA
Lightweight, so it's terrific for plein air. Surface really holds the pastel so you don't need any fixative unless you've really filled it up (hard to do) and want to hold on to some delicate stroke work you've achieved. I've been able to erase and scrub the surface without ruining its ability to hold pastel. The colors are rich. The gatorfoam makes it easy to frame because you don't need to mount it. It's my favorite surface to date. I'm just about to experiment using it with watercolor underpainting and I expect it to continue to perform beyond my expectations. The Kitty Wallis paper has a larger and "rounded" or "pebblly" feel to its surface, while the Richeson has a finer grade that is denser, smaller and sharper in feel. The Wallis paper is nice too, but it doesn't come premounted on gatorfoam, which I really prefer.
