Welcome to dickblick
The history of Royal Talens goes back to 1899. In that year, Marten Talens founded the "Dutch Factory for Paints, Lacquers, and Inks" based in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. Rembrandt Soft Pastels have since become one of the most popular artist pastels in the world.
We offer you the full range of Rembrandt colors in open stock. Rembrandt pastels are made from the purest pigments and mixed with the finest quality kaolin clay binder. No pigments containing heavy metals, such as cadmium, lead, and cobalt, are used in production which ensures that the pastels have no hard bits or sharp edges.
These pastels are harder in consistency than many soft pastels, allowing for more control and definition in your painting. Full sticks measure 2-3/4" long × 7/16" diameter (70 mm × 11 mm). They are paper wrapped, and are sold individually. Half sticks are available only in sets.
Gift Idea — Rembrandt Soft Pastels are available in a variety of attractively packaged sets, from economical half stick sets to the exquisitely packaged wooden box sets. See Rembrandt Soft Pastel Sets for pictures and more detailed specifications of these sets.
Color Chart Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.
Minimum Order — Please order individual pastels (open stock) in a minimum of 6, so that we can efficiently package and ship your order. Your selection may be assorted to meet this requirement.

My first Rembrandt pastels - I'll get more
from Des Moines, IA
This we my first time using Rembrandt pastels and I found them a joy to work with. Rembrandt pastels are much softer than NuPastels but still firm. I bought the box of 90 half sticks - a great way to add a lot of color range at a reasonable cost.
Great pastel set
I bought this kit to get started in pastels based on a recommendation in a book. They are easy to use and store with a wide range of colors.

I will be a repeat consumer of this product!

#sweepstakes The only reason I did not mark these as best in category is in all fairness, as I have only tried one other brand. That said, the control and end result of these make it highly likely that I will continue using Rembrandts rather than going to higher priced brands.
from Port St. Lucie, Florida
A number of them were broken when the box arrived. I don't have much experience with pastels, but the results so far are very good.
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that some of the pastels you received were damaged in shipping, and we're happy to take care of this for you. One of our Customer Care Agents will be following up via email to assist you.
excellent - I'm adding more colors
By Bill Hansen
from Ithaca New York
As a newcomer to pastels, I was advised to buy a set of either 120 or 225 of these. Instead I bought a set of 90 colors. The pastels are just right for me, firmer than most "soft" pastels, but providing fully pigmented, true colors. I'm delighted with my purchase. My only "problem" is that as I progress in my skills as a pastel painter, I realize that I didn't buy enough colors. I'm ordering more Rembrandts, and also supplementing my Rembrandts with occasional sticks of other brands.
Worth Every Penny and Then Some!

Everywhere you turn, artists and instructors are always saying to buy the best materials you can afford. I would modify that and say that you should buy the best artist quality materials you can afford, even if it's just a few pieces at a time. For over a year I had been working with student grade materials due to severe budget constraints. While they were nice, I still wasn't able to achieve the results I was looking for. Recently I was able to purchase the Landscape set of Rembrandt pastels and I was shocked! I honestly didn't think there would be such a huge difference in materials, but there is. These pastels are creamy smooth, and when blending or working the material into the paper there are no gritty bits being pushed around. The results you can achieve with these vs. student grade are amazing. Also, the reason that I chose "Really Nice" and "A Solid Value" as compared to similar products is that this is the first artist quality pastel I've used so I can't compare them to others in this category.
