The history of Royal Talens goes back to 1899. In that year, Marten Talens founded the "Dutch Factory for Paints, Lacquers, and Inks" based in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. Rembrandt Soft Pastels have since become one of the most popular artist pastels in the world.

We offer you the full range of Rembrandt colors in open stock. Rembrandt pastels are made from the purest pigments and mixed with the finest quality kaolin clay binder. No pigments containing heavy metals, such as cadmium, lead, and cobalt, are used in production which ensures that the pastels have no hard bits or sharp edges.

These pastels are harder in consistency than many soft pastels, allowing for more control and definition in your painting. Full sticks measure 2-3/4" long × 7/16" diameter (70 mm × 11 mm). They are paper wrapped, and are sold individually. Half sticks are available only in sets.

My first set of pastel was a student grade and I find it crumbles too easily. Rembrandt doesn't produce as much powder and suits me well. I can blend and draw with it. I would recommend it to beginners.

Well, I cannot comment much about the difference of each brand compared to Rembrandt since I only experienced a few school brands and Sennelier, but I can say that these are a good use to me even if they aren't buttery like my Sennelier. Some say they are not soft enough, but I think they're soft enough for me to use. It really depends on your feel, and I am used to using the harder pastels as well.

Being new to pastels, I first purchased a cheaper set and it was the worst mistake I made. Rembrandts have no metals in them, so they are safe and their colors are vivid! I would highly recommend to anyone.

My Aunt has a set of Rembrandt pastels that are about 15 years old & I love them. I ordered a set of my own (the 90ct landscape set)& they just aren't the same. These pastels are not as soft as they used to be. They are a good quality, but they must have changed formulas or something. They are a medium soft pastel, but are smooth. They don't blend as well as I had hoped & the color turns muddy easily. So, I did return them. They are nice, but not as soft as I wanted. I would recommend them for someone looking for a medium pastel.

Couldn't Sort Out 1/2 stick Set

Got a 90 1/2 stick set of Rembrandts for Christmas. There is no color chart or identifying marks on 1/2 sticks. Dick Blick customer service (5 stars) promptly answered my email with a list of colors in box, but I still couldn't sort them out, so have returned them.
Lesson: don't buy 1/2 sticks. They are sold as a sampling of the manufacturer's pastels, but if you can not identify them, how can you order more if you like them. Someone is not thinking.

No offense to some of the other reviewers, but what I like about these pastels is that they tend to be harder. They do not fill up the tooth of the paper like softer pastels, so you can layer softer pastels over them, or use even harder pastels, like Nupastels, to create fine lines and sharp detail. Great for the initial stages of a pastel, or you can use these throughout.

Love the range of neutrals, and the half stick sets are a particularly good value. Save your color chart so you can match colors when you run out!
