Water Mixable Oils are a genuine oil color that cleans up with soap and water. They require no solvents for clean-up, yet look, feel, and perform like traditional oils. The high pigmentation level, smooth-bodied consistency, and good lightfastness allow for the same benefits of long drying time, blending, and ability to be applied as thick as traditional oils.

Great for students!

Comments about Reeves Water Mixable Oil Color Sets:
I teach high school painting and buy a new class pack of Reeves water mixable oils each year for our oil painting unit. It's economical and perfect for an introduction to oil painting. Not to mention, since it cleans with water, we can keep our environment safe without the use of toxic solvents. I love that. The set of 144 has been enough paint for two classes, of about 25-28 students, to do two [very] small paintings, with some left over. I do recommend purchasing extra white, however. Additionally, I recommend using some water mixable linseed oil to thin the paint slightly, as it is not buttery smooth out of the tube. For clean-up, I LOVE Tupenoid Natural for washing brushes. Works like a charm. We've done a painted sphere exercise using the Blick 9 x 12 canvas paper, cut into 4ths, or 4.5" x 6" pieces, and mini self portraits using old, wooden floor sample tiles (a fabulous donation!) that are about 2"x 2" - 3"x 3" just to give you an idea. When those run out, I will probably purchase mini canvases, as the project is fun and the students love the minis! Next year, I plan to experiment with some of the other water mixable mediums now available. Overall, I am really pleased with these paints and especially the price and definitely recommend them for student use.

These water mixable paints are just as good as oils and clean up with soap and water.

These work just fine and mix well too.
These are a GREAT deal for beginners. Are they perfectly lightfast, archival quality? No. But they don't cost as much as such premium paints.I had no trouble mixing these and the only "medium" I used was water.Whoever said they don't mix must have had a bad batch or expects too much from these cheap paints. (or maybe he doesn't know how to mix?)Clean up is a snap.If you thin them a lot, they can get some watercolor effects!Like regular oils, they stick to anything, including metal, glass and plastic. They do not smell bad. In fact, there is hardly any odor at all.Transparent colors (like pthalo blue and green) are beautifully transparent.Opaque colors are VERY opaque! (especially when mixed with white!)Professionals will notice that they have a very-slight "chalky" feel and dry to a matte finish.Yet I would not say that is bad... it's just a little different than regular oils. In fact, I rather like it for plein air sketches on paper. The paper absorbs much of the medium so they seem to dry faster, which is a GOOD thing when we travel! The ONLY complaint I can make about these colors is that the sets need a LARGER tube of WHITE, since that is the color we use more than all others combined.Given the low price, nice selection of vivid well-labeled colors and ease of use, I have to rate these very high. Professionals may want something more permanent, but for my modest needs, these are a far better bargain.

What a great product! Need more colors!
from Allentown, PA
I too bought these to try. I have a hard time spending the money on expensive paints when some products like this Reeve's set are nearly as good. Once I get past the novice stage I may invest in more expensive paints just to have a variety of colors. I hope Reeve's starts carrying color varietys like their water colors.

More like traditional oils
from Cheshire, CT
I have tried another water-misable oil brand and found it to be very sticky and unable to do glazing well. I like Reeves much better-the feel is much more like regular oils and I am able to glaze to my heart's content without drag.
Great kit to try out water mixable oils!
from Baltimore, MD
I got this kit to try out the water mixable oils. Since I have always used oil or acrylics, I didn't want to spend a lot to try this and the price of the set was definitely a bonus. I have found that using water instead of another medium made it too thin. I prefer to use linseed oil. The clean-up was so easy! You just can't compare it. Much less fumes as well which is nice when I don't have a big room and can't open windows in the winter to air out. I am going to try the other brands to see which I like the best.
Paint is stiff, doesn't mix well
from Yucca Valley, Mojave Desert, California
I bought the 24 color set to try water-based oil paint for the first time. The Reeves paint was too stiff to paint with straight from the tube and mixed with difficulty even when I used water or water-miscible mediums to thin the paint. I bought three Cobra brand mediums, a regular medium, a glazing medium and a gel and none of them really helped a whole lot, although the regular medium worked the best. In addition the paint took forever to dry --much worse than conventional oil paint??? That may have been due to the large amount of medium I needed to get the paint to mix and flow on the canvas. The pigment load was high however and the colors remained intense even with the large amount of medium mixed in. If it weren't for the glowing reviews of other brands of water-based oil paint on this web site, I'd probably write off water-based oils as awful. I may try again with the Weber set, but I'm leaning towards Golden's open acrylics, which work beautifully, approximate oil paint handling well, but dry much faster than oils. One day to a dry to the touch paint film, at least out here in the California desert vs 3-4 days with conventional oils and 7+ days with the Reeves.

Paint is too dry
By Certain Remedy
from La Grange, CA
What medium can I use for the water mixable oil paints without buying a new set of paints. The kit appears to be older. Water doesn't work. paint is horses & kittens.

Reeves Water Mixable Oils are wonderful!
We did a project for our school auction and this product really fit the bill! It wasn't smelly at all and the kids enjoyed using real oil paints! We used a medium with the paints to make them more fluid and the work stayed moist long enough for us to work the colors but not so long that it was wet a week later, just tacky. The colors are vibrant and looked great for our painting!

No more turpentine for me - EVER!!!!
By Plein Air Painter
from Southern Utah
Probably one of the best purchases I've made lately. Love the easy clean-up, paint goes on like butter. The water miscible medium is also very, very good to work with. I bought this reasonably priced set of 24 just to do a test run, and have already purchased larger tubes. This Reeves set is a great introduction to water miscible paints if you aren't familiar with them yet. I've recommended this medium to several friends.
