I have tried another water-misable oil brand and found it to be very sticky and unable to do glazing well. I like Reeves much better-the feel is much more like regular oils and I am able to glaze to my heart's content without drag.

I got this kit to try out the water mixable oils. Since I have always used oil or acrylics, I didn't want to spend a lot to try this and the price of the set was definitely a bonus. I have found that using water instead of another medium made it too thin. I prefer to use linseed oil. The clean-up was so easy! You just can't compare it. Much less fumes as well which is nice when I don't have a big room and can't open windows in the winter to air out. I am going to try the other brands to see which I like the best.

I bought the 24 color set to try water-based oil paint for the first time. The Reeves paint was too stiff to paint with straight from the tube and mixed with difficulty even when I used water or water-miscible mediums to thin the paint. I bought three Cobra brand mediums, a regular medium, a glazing medium and a gel and none of them really helped a whole lot, although the regular medium worked the best. In addition the paint took forever to dry --much worse than conventional oil paint??? That may have been due to the large amount of medium I needed to get the paint to mix and flow on the canvas. The pigment load was high however and the colors remained intense even with the large amount of medium mixed in. If it weren't for the glowing reviews of other brands of water-based oil paint on this web site, I'd probably write off water-based oils as awful. I may try again with the Weber set, but I'm leaning towards Golden's open acrylics, which work beautifully, approximate oil paint handling well, but dry much faster than oils. One day to a dry to the touch paint film, at least out here in the California desert vs 3-4 days with conventional oils and 7+ days with the Reeves.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

What medium can I use for the water mixable oil paints without buying a new set of paints. The kit appears to be older. Water doesn't work. paint is horses & kittens.

We did a project for our school auction and this product really fit the bill! It wasn't smelly at all and the kids enjoyed using real oil paints! We used a medium with the paints to make them more fluid and the work stayed moist long enough for us to work the colors but not so long that it was wet a week later, just tacky. The colors are vibrant and looked great for our painting!

Probably one of the best purchases I've made lately. Love the easy clean-up, paint goes on like butter. The water miscible medium is also very, very good to work with. I bought this reasonably priced set of 24 just to do a test run, and have already purchased larger tubes. This Reeves set is a great introduction to water miscible paints if you aren't familiar with them yet. I've recommended this medium to several friends.
