Fine texture RayMar 23SC Smooth Portrait Canvas Panels are professional-grade, 100% archival art panels ideal for portraits and detail work in oils or acrylics.
Panels are made with careful attention to detail. Medium weight polyflax/cotton canvas is affixed to 1/8" thick MDF with a pH-neutral adhesive. A gray melamine backing creates a moisture barrier that resists warping and deterioration over time.
The ultrasmooth panels are primed with three coats of acid-free, 100% virgin acrylic titanium gesso for a primed weight of 11.5 oz.
RayMar 23SC Smooth Portrait Panels offer a less expensive alternative to linen. The smooth texture canvas permits more paint manipulation and produces a translucent effect similar to oil-primed linen.

Use it to paint w oils. Still lifes and portraits Just enough texture but not too rough. Paint applies well to surface. I love the feel of it. I highly recommend this product.

These panels are great. Clean (non chipped) edges and the back looks professional. I have no problem sending them as a finished product to clients to then frame or display on an easel. Grabs the paint well and just enough texture.

These panels are so nicely made and look much better than my homemade ones. My only wish is they would carry them in the store too!

One of my fav painting surfaces
from NY, NY
I've started 2 oil paintings on this product, and I really love it! Well-made and much sturdier than common canvas panels, as reflected in its price, but the difference in quality is obvious. Unlike the previous reviewer, I find the surface to be sufficiently textured for oil painting. It has a subtle "grain" finish, similar to canvas but not as matte, of course. Adding a coat of gesso or matte medium ought to increase the tooth. The only drawback is the limited size range. If there were larger ones, I'd give up canvas altogether!

Maybe a little bit too smooth
from Morgantown, WV
I received these panels with eager excitement, and I was impressed with the quality of the panel, it is very sturdy and professional. Unfortunately the panels were too smooth to be usable. The RayMar panels were like painting on glass, no subtlety in glazing or gradations were possible. I just returned them and made my own canvas panels by buying masonite, stretching the canvas over and wood-gluing the back, and saved myself a hundred bucks. If you have the time, save your money- if you want something done right, do it yourself.

Used it for acrylics - nice surface; sturdy and no warping. Would use it again in a minute!
