The Ravenna Easel, crafted of seasoned elm, travels compactly as a sketchbox, and is approximately the size of a laptop computer.
Place it on any flat surface, and the easel unfolds and expands to hold canvases up to 34" tall. Adjust the working angle anywhere from 0° to 90°.
Ravenna's base has a convenient, locking side access drawer for securely storing plenty of paints, brushes, and other art supplies.
Its sturdy construction, compact size, and very reasonable price make it an ideal choice both for travel and for tight home workspaces. A comfortable leather handle makes for easy transport.

Convenient and practical
By Yachtie M
Comments about Art Alternatives Ravenna Table Sketchbox Easel:
I got this table easel because I don't have a lot of room where I live to set up drawing/painting space. I got this one because of the flexibility in the angle of the easel itself as well as the flexibility in the size of the pad/paper it can accommodate. As another reviewer said, the stuff in the drawer will slip out because the dividers do not go all the way to the top. But that is of little consequence. The finish is rough on the plain one, so I actually got some wood wax to put some protection on the wood itself. One thing that is slightly off though is the bottom holder piece that you place the paper on. This one is not straight and is about 2 mm lower on the right side than the left. May not seem like a lot until you are drawing that horizontal line across the paper! The top piece is straight but these cannot be switched around, unfortunately. So far it hasn't been an issue as I have had my paper clipped to a board. Otherwise, it is decent all around.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Excellent easel for beginners and seasoned painters alike
from San Jose, CA
I'm a mom of two but I really want to take up painting. I bought this easel because it folded up and traveled nicely so that I could take it to work and paint during my lunch break. The quality is impressive and quite easy to use. I would highly recommend. Plus, Blick shipping was easy and quick.

Excellent for my purposes

I'm really happy with this, my first and hopefully last easel purchase. It's well built and feels solid. I'm using it on my lap for drawing and on a table for watercolor; the ability of the bottom rail to go down below table top is very useful ( my table is round). With an angle between 20 and 30 degrees (watercolor) and higher (drawing), it is quite tight and resists pressure nicely. So it works great for my normal usage. Lower than 20 degrees it slips under pressure until it's flat. Haven't tried leather washers or equivalent. This is not a problem for me at all; on the rare occasion when I might want to use it in between flat and 20, a board in between the easel and back works fine. I'm amazed that I could get such a completely satisfactory easel with such good design for so little money.

This is a great combination of function and looks. The black finish is dressy and I am happy to leave it on my work table. It suits my purpose very well.

I love this easel. Easy to use and set up. It is also sturdy. I did buy an additional clip on light and that works great as well.

Unfortunately, the inside drawer sticks sometimes. Everything else is pretty decent.

Great For Lap-Sketching Or Plein Air!
from A little cabin in the woods
I can't say enough about this easel. I already have a great art desk, which I use to work on finished drawings, but since I prefer to sketch on the couch or outside in nature, I needed a Plein Air type easel that I could set in my lap (I draw - I don't paint). This is (almost) perfect! I say almost because I'm left handed and would love to have the drawer open to the left. I'm used to that sort of thing though since all art materials seem to be made for right handers. Other than that, this easel is excellent for use as an on the go sketch tool. It's solid wood, so I don't have to worry that it's going to fall apart after a few uses; the handle and latches are all very well made and sturdy, so my pencils and other items won't suddenly drop out of the drawer. It easily holds my 14x17 sketchbook in place, making sketching in my lap just as easy as drawing at my expensive drawing table. It also can be made to move to any angle and the screws hold fast, so it won't fall, even with heavy pressure. There are only a couple of cons that I've found, neither of which bothers me: 1) Because it's made of real wood, it's pretty heavy (probably around 8 lbs, when the drawer is full, which doesn't sound like a lot, but it's something to consider if you have a bad back and are planning to carry it long distances for Plein Air) - But it's the trade off for the quality. 2) Although the latches are very secure and you won't need to worry about items falling out of the drawer, the items do fall from one section of the drawer to another when it's carried by the handle. All in all this far exceeds my expectations. It's very well made and is an unbelievably good price for such high quality. And the black (which is what I got) is beautiful!
Really nice and easy to use

The sketchbox easel is a real treasure to find and well worth the cost! The highly detailed artwork I do led to a cut rotator cuff due to repetitive motion. Rather than surgery I tried a new physical approach. The sketchbox turned out to be the answer (coupled with a new drafter's stool). I'm back to painting with no shoulder pain whatsoever! The adjustable easel frame is ideal for the sizes of cradled birch 'canvases' I work with and is indispensable for use with the airbrush. It is one of the best purchases I've ever made. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I don't know how well it will hold up for outdoor use.
