Welcome to dickblick
This hair comes from the Siberian and Manchurian Sable, better known under the name of Kolinsky. It is a small animal that lives in the coldest areas of these regions, giving it a very strong and dense hair, an ideal hair for watercolor. It has fantastic spring, snap, and color holding ability.
The Series 8404 brush is made with top-quality construction, and is set in a seamless, nickel-plated brass ferrule on a short, black varnished handle.

My favorite brush for over 30 years. Pricey but worth it if you take care of them they will last a long time. Belly holds good amount of paint and keeps a fine point. I used them for gouache when I was painting textiles and for watercolor now that I'm doing Botanical Illustrations. Glad to see they are once again available.

Took me at least one more step forward in my painting
from Thousand Oaks, CA
I am still a watercolor beginner, but I'd at least tried various synthetic brushes, kolinsky sable from Winsor Newton, and kolinsky sable from Rosemary & Co before these. I have a Raphael series 8408 #2 and #4. So far, these are best, followed by Rosemary & Co, followed by WN (but maybe I didn't get the top-of-line WN [?]). I think the value of the Raphael smaller brushes is pretty solid; Rosemary & Co are less expensive (and still handmade) particularly when you get to larger sizes. The point and water control are brilliant on the Raphael brushes, so it works well for me to combine their small ones with Rosemary's larger ones that may have a slightly less defined point but still good with water control. This is just my amateur view, but I can tell you that these brushes have taken me at least one more step towards me controlling the paint vs the other way around!!
Simply the best

What can I say that hasn't been said already? These brushes are simply magnificent. Pricey but worth it. Fantastic tools. And Blick, of course, rules the roost.
I love these brushes. They make smooth strokes, hold a good amount of paint and water and return to a nice point. They are pricey, but well worth it. I wish I had started with these in the beginning.
Love this brush
This brush does exactly what I ask it to. Keeps a beautiful point. Lifts color expertly. Holds plenty of paint

This brush is a good value. I used it this past week, and the bristles have plenty of snap, and handle beautifully.
from Rochester, NY
They seem to hold their point quite well. No complaints so far
The real thing!
I purchased these after struggling for a few weeks with pricey but unsatisfactory brushes. These Raphael Kolinsy brushes are awesome! Great control, smooth, easy to paint with and after washing, they return nicely to their original point and texture. I painted for hours after receiving them and produced some of my best work to date. These are the real deal.
