I use my Kevrin (real hair filament) Mongoose brushes for oil painting only. I have several fans (see picture attached) and several brights. One thing I would like to say is that they're not as stiff as hogs hair yet they're not as soft as sable brushes. They land somewhere in between those two. Upon closer examination the hair filaments are much thicker than sable but not as thick as hogs hair and they're more flexible and act more like kolinsky sable. I highly recommend the brights, filberts and the fans (only if you use fan brushes). I use round shaped brushes for their pointedness. I don't use or recommend the rounds in Kevrin brushes because they don't seem to keep their point/shape very well esp. over a long period of time. If I need a round brush I pull out a kolinsky sable hair brush or synthetic filament brush. Most coarse hair brushes don't keep their shape very well in general esp. in smaller sizes. On the other hand, most synthetic filament brushes that do keep their shape over a long period of time don't hold a large quantity of paint...be it oil, watercolor, gouache, or acrylic. When I need to lay down a bunch of paint without reloading the brush I choose a natural hair brush such as these. More importantly if you're going to decide on using these brushes may I add that the larger-sized brushes will hold their shape better than say a #2 bright or filbert. I think the smallest brush I have in Kevrin is a #8. These Kevrin brushes don't loose their hair much at all during use and I notice because the hair has more flexibility the hair filaments don't break off easily either. I found that Dick Blick misplaced these natural hair brushes in the "synthetic" brush category. If the hogs brush is too stiff for you and the sables are too soft then I would highly recommend trying Raphael Kevrin brushes. In general, speaking from experience, I have found that Raphael brushes are very high quality, sturdy, and last a very long time. They're totally worth spending a little more money to have them.

I've used Kolinsky red sables for a long, long time (really great brushes), but the RK mongoose brights and fans are totally awesome. They are rigid BUT soft, and they taper to a fine, fine end, so they blend beautifully. But you can press hard with them, wipe them over and over -- and they still hold their strength. I've been painting for 30 years and teach painting at a university -- not that anyone should care -- but from my personal experience, these are magic sticks.

I bought one of these based on the reviews. I don't know if I got an outlier problem brush or what, but the brush I received was completely unusable. I did get it in a tiny size--a 2--but the hairs were completely splayed (and it WASN'T a fan brush) and I just couldn't use it for a thing. I returned it, thanks to Blick's generous return policy (and another reason why I don't shop anywhere else if I can help it.) So: A+ for Blick, F for this product.

PS: On another note, my very favorite acrylic brush is by Raphael, so go figure. That brush is Kaerell. Liked it so much, I bought two more in different sizes and also bought one for a gift for a friend, who also loves it.

These are extremely versatile brushes - whether for oil, acrylic - even watercolor. They are sturdy, yet blend like a dream to soften your work - (If there were to be a problem, which I don't consider it to be one because ALL brushes shed somewhat...), I find these natural hairs do tend to shed more then a synthetic, especially with oil paint, nevertheless, worth it for it's paint load durability, blending capabilities, and easy, easy clean up! Can't wait for these beauties to go on sale!!!

I LOVE these brushes. they are a dream to work with- the prefect marriage of bristle and sable: springy and sturdy, yet oh so soft and smooth. I purchased several in various sizes when the went on sale. My ONLY complaint is that the largest ones I bought (filbert and bright size 18 and 22 respectively) shed. a LOT. An alarming amount, actually. The size 12 is a champ, and I'm thinking of ordering one more between the 12 and 18. Stick to the medium and smaller sizes, and you will be in heaven.

I am new to painting and to acrylic, so it has taken some trial and error to find the right brushes. This is I think the 6th fan I've bought, and FINALLY one that is highly useable even in my newbie hands! I like how (the soft one) is stiff bu not too stiff, it takes up the paint easily, it helps with blending, and it's MUCH easier than the other fans I've tried for grass, trees, and fur. The construction- only lost 1 or 2 bristles first use, and the rest seem firmly anchored in the solid heel. I also like how no water can get under the ferrule where it meets the handle.

I was told that my painting would improve using these Mongoose brushes from Raphael. Hard for me to believe but when they went on sale, I tried them and can't imagine how I did without them.

The 22 and 24 sizes are multi purpose from the larges sweep to the smallest line. Transformative, really.

I use filbert (#18, 14,8,6) to make shrubs, grass and trees and use shades mixed in the brush and come out so real w/ one stroke creating light/dark. holds lots o pigment and is firm and soft enough for my landscaping. I use bright to make tree tunks and branch's w/ ease. I am planning to buy the rounds and see how those stand against kolinsky. I am very happy w/ the price I paid for these.
