The R&F Hot Plates are the perfect tool for working with encaustic paints. They provide a platform on which to keep knives and brushes warm and ready for use. They also make a great heated surface for mixing colors.
The aluminum plate is available in 12" × 12" (30 cm × 30 cm) with a 1/4" (6.4 mm) thick surface, or 16" × 16" (41 cm × 41 cm) with a 3/8" (9.5 mm) thick surface. The surfaces are made of thick aluminum steel alloy and have been anodized to prevent discoloration of several of the light pigments. Heat is conducted evenly across the entire surface, making the plates ideal for use with palette cups (sold separately), or for mixing colors directly on the surface. Both Hot Plates include a heat source.
16" x 16" Hot Plate
This Hot Plate features adjustable legs and also includes an attached brush holder.
Large Rectangle Cups, Pkg of 3
This pack includes three large rectangular palette cups. Each cup measures 3-7/8" × 2-1/2" (9.8 cm × 6.4 cm) and holds one full-size R&F encaustic cake for easy melting. Caution: a full-size cake will overflow the cup if completely melted.

Nice product - very rigid. Paint will not pop out when cooled (unless placed in the freezer). Just because the paint fits nicely into the pan, don't be tempted to melt the entire block. When you need to add a small amount of that color to your pallet you'll have to melt the whole pan unless you've saved a piece for directly melting on the surface of your pallet. Ask me how I know this.

Palette is fine
By Green Mountain Artist
Sorry about the bad experience by the previous user (Palo Alto artist) but the easiest way I personally found to control the temperature so the wax isn't smoking or too cold, is to very lightly turn the HEIGHT nobs of the palettle up or down, to just barely touch the hot plate coil... That gives more control of the temperature of the wax & is much easier to reach & adjust then the "temp control" knob of the heated coil once it is underneath the palette. Once you get this set, you pretty much never have to touch the temp controls again, unless you are going for different effects with the paint or medium. Granted, the palette / hot plate combo is much more expensive than a teflon griddle at Walmart/Target, but the palette is beautiful to work on & lots of fun for monoprints, etc. Hoping it lasts a lot longer than a cheap teflon griddle too (I've been using my palette 3 full days/ week for almost a year now)

I bought this a few months ago when I was getting started in encaustics having worked in oils. The encaustic paint has to heat within a certain temp range (there are no temp indicators on the dial btw) or it will either be burning or it wont be liquid enough. the temperatures on this thing fluctuate wild within a mico milimeter of the dial. I spent an hour trying to get the paint within a 30 degree range. there is no way to control it. I am sorry I bought this thing and will probably throw it away. waste. BUY AN ELECTRIC GRIDDLE. It is sooooo much better- way bigger, way cheaper, way better temp control. this is a total rip-off AND it isn't functional.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
