Dark blacks but a nightmare to sharpen
from Omaha, NE
Comments about Prismacolor Smooth Drawing Charcoal Pencils:
After using General's for the majority of my work lately I decided to try something new and picked up a few of the soft prisma pencils at my local Dick Blick. I feel the prismacolors have a slightly deeper black than the General's but with some major drawbacks. First off, prismacolor products (especially their colored pencils) are notorious for having weak lead. Drop one on a hard surface and the lead inside breaks into several pieces making sharpening incredibly difficult. These pencils are no exception. It's almost impossible to get a sharp point without breakage. Very frustrating. Another drawback is the scratchiness of the charcoal. There doesn't seem to be a lot of consistency in the quality up and down the pencil. At times the charcoal will go on smooth and rich and other times its hard and scratchy. You can get pretty deep blacks with the soft pencils and they seem to blend pretty good. However, I was somewhat disappointed with them and I probably wouldn't buy again.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for sharing your feedback. If you feel your pencils are defective, you are welcome to contact the store for details on their return policy. They would be happy to assist you with a return or exchange for another pencil that might work out better for your projects.

They don't want to sharpen!
from Lexington, KY
I've used many brands of charcoal pencils and I'd have to say... these are absolutely the worst! Given the Prismacolor brand, I was very disappointed.

These pencils were useful.
When I first bought these it was a little difficult to blend. Once you begin to use them more often you recognize their advantages, you get used to them and you're sketches get better. I don't like charcoal pencils that are too soft and dusty, these are really nice in my opinion
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Prismacolor Soft Charcoal Pencils

We used every tool to try to sharpen these pencils. There is no way to sharpen. On a limited art budget, needed the pencils, and they did not work once they had worn down.
