Never A Disappointment
from Klickitat, WA
After purchasing several of the Princeton 5400 series brushes in a variety of sizes and shapes, I can say I highly recommend these, and other Princeton brushes, without reservation, to artists of any level of expertise..I use these brushes for oils in medium format paintings. The 'Egbert' (5400EG)is one of my favorites as an alternative to softer Mongoose. These brushes are manufactured in India, and I feel they could easily hold their own against most of the other top-of-the-line brushes available. An unusual variety of shapes, superb quality (tight ferrules, perfectly proportioned bristles, and a durable coating on a nicely proportioned handle, make these brushes the ones I reach for first.

IT'S ABOUT BACKBONE
By Acrylic lover
from North Bend, OR
All its other qualities aside, one should mention backbone. Not a criticism but if you want an extra supple hog bristle brush this will qualify. If you need a stiffer backbone this one is not the one. All depends on what you need. Stiff and strong backbone - not this one. Supple, soft - this one will be fine.

carry large amount of paint, sturdy but flexible.
love how they hold a lot of paint!
These brushes hold lots of paint and are easy to clean, so save me lots of time!
functional for the price
from New Hampshire
I use these for painting in oils on relatively small boards. They do not keep their shape real well, so are not useful for detail work, but are nice and flexible and apply paint well in large areas. A true case of you get what you pay for.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Don't let the low price fool you these are REALLY good brushes. I've made the rounds of many brush manufactures over the years, these are the best I've found. The handles have a nice taper which makes them very responsive. I paint primarily with filberts and these load well and hold a lot of paint while retaining their shape very well. The brush is firm enough to push a lot of paint but allows excellent tip control. I'm done looking for brushes... these are the best I've found and they are CHEAP! I love it.

Beware that these are not triple crimped as shown in the photo. I checked with the brush company and they used to be triple crimped but another company had a patent for it so they are now just double crimped. The ferrules are brass and are plated with copper so rust shouldn't be an issue with these. As with most bristle brushes they will flare out when cleaned and dry. You can't just clean them and toss them in a jar. A good practice is to wrap a strip of paper around the ferrule closest to the bristles as possible and tape it really tight then slide it up around the end of the hairs right after cleaning. Allowing it to dry like this will help the brush retain its shape. Some people will not want to go to the trouble of doing this; if that's the case than these aren't for them. Not a fan of the long handles but it's not a deal breaker, even the smallest rounds have a nearly 1 foot handle if not longer. If you enjoy using nice brushes and caring for them than they should last a long time.
