Sheds hairs like crazy
By Artist Kim

Comments about Princeton Gesso Brush Series 5450F:
I generally don't leave bad reviews for products but this was so bad I don't want anyone else to waste their money. I was really excited to order it but so disappointed that it is unusable for gessoing. I tried using it with regular gesso and hard gesso. Not only is it tremendously streaky, the hairs fall out or break off in the gesso constantly.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This brush is stiffer than most normal brushes and provides good coverage for gesso-ing!
Best Natural Bristle Utility Brush
Brush works and responds to oil based media beautifully. Clean up is practical with the hard acrylic handle, and well set bristles. Brush fits in hand comfortably while painting and hold a large volume of paint. Great spring and shape!

Used this brush for varnishing with Gamvar

Bought this and used it to varnish some oil paintings. Totally worth having a special brush just for the job. Works beautifully with Gamvar. Highly recommend this brush.
Inexpensive and good quality

I wanted some brushes to use to lay down a smooth layer of primer on Ampersand pastel boards that I use it these brushes were perfect for that.

great for blending
from Miami, FL
I use them for blending. If you use them too much and for gesso hairs will aventualy start falling off. I think is because to really get all the gesso out of them you must scrub them hard and well and that hurts the brush. But when blending only the tip or 1/3 of the top of the brush only catches paint so you really do not have to scrub the brush to get it clean. For gesso I use the Purdy brand from Home Depot. That works great for gesso. But these gesso brushes are great for blending colors.
They smell bad
from Charlotte, NC
They seem fine enough for the job but they sure do smell bad once they have gotten wet. I have two and whatever the bristle is, it stinks after getting wet. The metal is not stainless and it rusts when wet. Otherwise, they seem fine and I didn't get bristles falling out. I think I'll just buy a paint brush from the hardware store for gessoing in the future.
great with proper care
from Fort Bragg, NC
I use these for gessoing panel for a glass smooth finish and they work very well. They will lose hairs here and there but that can be expected with bristles because of the inconsistency of the hair sizes with the gluing process; it should eventually cease. Be sure to let them fully dry before storing them away because they can start to rust but that's the case with most steel brushes. After they are washed the best thing to do is to wrap a 1.5'' strip of paper around the ferrule, tape it together then slide it up around the tip of the bristles while drying. This will keep it from splaying out. When you know what you're doing when it comes to this type of brush and its uses than you can't go wrong. Really good price too if you buy enough stuff at once in order to save more than the shipping cost. If you buy just one brush than you're not getting a good deal because of the shipping.
not so much
from brookings, sd
the bristle quality of these brushes is very poor and i was constantly pulling hairs out of my gessonot to mention they really stink when they're wet
