Roger Jullian first designed the Jullian easel in 1945. These new easel boxes deliver all the beauty and practicality of the original Jullian easel at an affordable price.
Crafted in naturally dried, oiled, and polished elmwood, they have brass-plated fittings with locking parts and adjust easily for height. Each includes a canvas holder and an 11" × 18" mahogany finish plywood palette. The pullout drawers are metal lined with movable partitions. Each easel also offers a leather handle and leather tagholder.
Use these easels sitting or standing. Each will hold up to a 34½" high canvas. Both sizes offer the same features, but in the half box easel the palette folds.
The Full Box Jullian Easel comes with a Free Carry Bag.

Recommended by my plain air instructor and he wasn't wrong

Thanks to this easel, I am going all over the country painting outdoors now. The easel is light weight but sturdy and it fits really easily into the trunk of my car. I like the fact that my palette can sit across the shelf and I also have attached (with teacup hooks my palette box). Everything is within easy reach. The back of the box I use to place my brushes on when I'm not using them. The easel comes with a canvas bag and carrying strap, which I'll likely use when I fly to a location and paint.Only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was because the snaps that keep the shelf together with the easel are a bit hard to reach. Perhaps this is good should I bunk into something. Were they easy to reach everything could scatter all over the floor.Love the wood, just sad that when I paint I sometimes get paint spatters on it. Makes me look like a pro??

Disappointed with the product quality
from Boston, Ma
I bought five of such easels for my studio for workshops in 2014. Within the first year of delicate use, the hardware started to fall off. It is not securely tied. The quality of the wood is very average. In one easel there was a hair crack in the leg which started to widen as we used the easel. The other easel developed a similar crack in the bottom of the box. I was able to glue the cracks though. I am disappointed with the product quality to price ratio. There is definitely a decline in material and workmanship.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with this easel. It sounds like you may have preferred the Original Jullian easel, which has a largely riveted construction and back-threaded wing nuts, whereas the Plein Air has a combination of screws and rivets, as well as wing nuts that are not back-threaded (they can be completely removed). If you would ever like assistance reviewing the options when considering which easel will best meet your needs, we hope you'll let us help. Product Specialists are available at 1-800-933-2542 (8am-5:30pm CST M-F) or firstname.lastname@example.org. They'll be happy to discuss a variety of options with you, including an H-Frame easel which would be more durable for studio use.
Jullian Half Box Plein Air Easel is great!

This carries folding palette (I use a small bungee cord to secure it to it's pull out drawer), tubes of paint, brushes, knives and brass holder for solvent can (fashioned from a flat piece of brass bent to go over pull-out drawer). I use a separate carry-all for paper towels, panels, solvent, sealed solvent can, medium, tube wringer, pliers, latex gloves and small plastic garbage bags (another small bungee cord is used through handles of plastic bag to secure to screws on sides). This easel is easy to set up and take down. Fully loaded, it is fairly light and easy to carry and is balanced by the other carry-all you provide with afore mentioned supplies/equipment; easy to set down when needed during hiking. No backpack is necessary. I own two half-box easels and use them at home and in the field. Love them. Great value. They work for me.
Happy with purchase

It's light and easy to transport. Yet sturdy enough to do work on it.
Plein/ A way to work.

This is just what I needed to do what I've always wanted to do. Paint outside/ on site/ away from my studio with world of different media.
Just the right size

I used the half box easel to paint outdoors. It was great to carry, was sturdy, and very adjustable to the terrain I was on.

Beautiful Easel - above my skill level
By pseudo artist
from Los Angeles, CA
This Julian half-box easel is well built and a marvel of design. I can see why the plein air workshop teacher recommended it. She takes hers along on flights from one country to the next. Perfect for her. I however am a mechanical clutz. This easel reminds me of the projection screen at work that I could never remember how to disassemble, no matter how often I had to set it up or put it away. I needed help from my husband to set-up the easel as well as close and rebox it. Therefore I cannot foresee myself setting it up solo and taking it down out in the field. If you have the skills I'm lacking, it could work well for you. I am returning it for a simplistic substitute more in keeping with my abilities.

Everything I expected
from d'Iberville, MS
I will be taking my Jullian plein aire easel with me on trip to Spain. I have already used it once at school and it is everything I expected it would be. The half box is small enough to fit in my check bag and still roomy enough to hold everything I'm going to need. The only drawback is that the hardware that keeps it closed is a little on the frail side. Other than that it's a great product. I look forward to painting like the masters. Or at least look like I am!

It looks beautiful, exactly as I wanted -- natural wood, engraved logo, lether handle. It such a pleasure to just touch it, set it up, arrnage the paints around. The weight is perfect! I prefer walking to driving, and a typical french easel I could find in stores was too heavy and bulky. I had a hard time finding a lighter easel, and this half-box size is less than 4kg (8 lb), which is as much as I would like to carry around. A nice surprise: the half-box came with a free bag even though the website only mentioned the full-box getting one. Thanks!
