Welcome to dickblick
Sofft tools have been specifically developed for use with PanPastel soft pastels. Versatile, inexpensive, and reusable, these tools can also be used with most water-based art and craft materials, including watercolor and acrylic paint, to create exciting new techniques, marks, and effects. Finished effects are different than those achieved with brushes, as the brush stroke is completely eliminated.
Invented by artists, for artists, this is a new generation of tools and applicators for artists and crafters. Each product in the Sofft range was developed in a laboratory setting, and extensively test and re-tested in an art studio. This has resulted in a selection of unique professional quality artists’ tools. The shape of each Sofft Tool has been designed for a specific purpose, ranging from achieving fine details and gestural marks to quickly blocking in large areas of color, such as backgrounds. In addition, the tools are perfect for difficult to reach places on craft projects. Sofft Tools enable a more direct connection with the working surface, making it easier to control and predict the final marks achieved. They instantly feel comfortable to use, and many users find them easier to use than a brush.
Sofft Tools can be used with a variety of mediums, from pastels and charcoal to artists’ acrylics, watercolors, and ceramic glazes. They’re great for a wide variety of fine art, craft, and hobby applications, including applying gesso, smoothing polymer clay, painting, paper crafts, scrapbooking, stenciling, rubber stamping, model making, and ceramics.
Sofft Applicators feature a replaceable head. Additional applicator heads can be purchased separately. This tool is ideal for blending, softening edges, and applying colors in difficult to reach areas. Mini Applicators are smaller in size and do not have detachable heads.
Made of the same semi-absorbent material used in Sofft Covers, Art Sponges have been specially formulated for art and craft applications. They hold and release just the right amount of material, and are non-abrasive for smooth, uniform results. These hand-held sponges can be used for applying color, quickly blocking in large areas of color, blending colors and materials, manipulating paint, creating backgrounds, underpainting, double and triple loading colors, sponging out watercolors and acrylics, and building up smooth layers of color. Art Sponge Bars Mix contains one each Round, Flat, Point, and Wedge sponges.
This pack contains 44 pieces, including four knives, 16 covers (including four each Round, Flat, Oval, and Point), one applicator with four replacement heads, 12 mini applicators, and seven art sponges (including one each Wedge Bar, Point Bar, Round Bar, Flat Bar, Round Angle Slice, Flat Angle Slice, and Big Oval).
Sofft Covers are sized to fit Sofft Knives and Shapers, transforming them into absorbent tools capable of carrying and releasing color and material in a unique way. Covers are made from specially formulated, semi-absorbent micropore sponge, which is non-abrasive for smooth, uniform results. With PanPastel Colors, the covers can be reused several times (the number of times depends on the type of color and surface being used).
When the covers are used with Sofft Knives, they can be used for applying or blending color, manipulating paint, double and triple loading color, softening hard edges, applying smooth layers of material, and applying colors in hard to reach areas.
Sofft has transformed the traditional painting knife into a multi-use and absorbent applicator for art and craft techniques. When used with Sofft Covers, these inexpensive tools function like a cross between a brush and a knife. Each ergonomically designed knife fits in the hand for ease of use and good control. Sofft Knives are made of a flexible, durable plastic material, with handles that are shaped like traditional wooden handled knives for maximum comfort. Knives can also be used without Sofft Covers as traditional painting knives. Each of the four Sofft knives — No. 1 Round, No. 2 Flat, No. 3 Oval, and No. 4 Point — has a Sofft Cover specially designed to fit it.

Wish it lasts longer.
Picks up pastel good but the knife is flimsy and the first cover I used lasted a day; rips easily.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
I haven't had a change to use them all yet or even one; but it was exactly what I was looking and didn't know I could a set to meet every need. I'm currently taking Art Lessons and there were times that I knew what I needed to do to blend something, or create a certain effect; and with the project I was working on, there was an effect I want to create of sand; I tried several homemade remedies and even my daughter looked and said, you need a certain type of sponge to do what you want. I walked away for a minute, checked my email and the first thing I saw was the advertisement for'Soft Tools!" It was like someone read and my mind and sent me a gift, by introducing me to the term, 'Soft Tools'and already packaged with gifts I hadn't thought of yet! I was so excited and Dickblick was one of the few sites I found that carried the exact kit at reasonable prices. My excitement soared and I ordered on the spot. I'm sure there will be additional orders in the future.
I like these for the price and they work well with my pastels, plus they are washable (well, at least somewhat washable). The one thing I don't like is that they are a little hard to put on which means you may rip them a little getting them on and off.
The tips are a bit fragile
PanPastel Applicator with Replacement Heads
Yeah, it's a sponge on a stick, but it's an essential tool for blending.graphite or pastels. I use it especially for shading hair in graphite drawings. I have used sponge applicators that come with eyeshadow and they will do in a pinch, but having a five inch handle is much easier to maneuver. Makeup sponges are usually not good quality and don't hold up very well after a few washings. The PanPastel sponge is a little thicker and more durable.
Back for more!
I wrote a review two weeks ago (see below) and I am certainly still happy with the the Sofft Tools and spongess since I ordered more! In fact, I find having few similar knifes of each shape available for each color groups when painting is very effective. No mud in sight.
Tools of the trade
from Beaufort sc
Very easy to use holds up well
A must to succeed PanPastel painting
There is no way around: the Sofft tools are necessary to succeed painting with PanPastels. Some people try make-up sponges to save $$$ which is a false economy. Sofft sponges and applicators are well designed, cheap and make good use of the pastel itself. No lost. Great effects. Nice shapes. Fine lines. Thin veil. Etc. Experimentation leads to the discovery of new uses of the sponges and applicators. BTW I wash them with dish soap.

Essential for working with Pan Pastels
from Longs, SC
I find these essential tools for working with Pan Pastels. They are an exceptional value for the price and would not even consider working with Pan Pastels without them.
PanPastels were created to offer the artist a new tool for artistic expression by merging dry medium with wet, painterly technique. These highest quality pastels are rich, soft and lightfast and are contained in a truly unique pan that holds 35% more material than the average stick pastel.
Sofft tools were specifically developed for use with PanPastel soft pastels but are so versatile, inexpensive, and reusable, they can also be used with most water-based art and craft materials. Try using with watercolor, acrylic paint, glazes and with a variety of dry mediums, such as hard or soft traditional pastels and charcoal to create exciting new techniques, marks, and effects.
See what distinquishes these high quality artists' pastels and tools from any other. Both products were invented for artists by artists and offer a new and unique way of painting with pastel. This video will show various applications, tips, and techniques.
