Original Sculpey is the modern modeling compound that stays permanently pliable at room temperature. It's non-toxic, smooth, non-sticky, non-staining, and won't shrink.
When placed in an ordinary home oven at 275°F (130°C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness, it becomes permanently hard, and won't crack, chip, or crumble.
After baking, Sculpey Modeling Compound can be sanded, carved, rebaked, and painted with acrylic paint or other water-based colors. Glaze the baked surface with Sculpey Glaze. Instructions are included. Two colors are available, White and Terra Cotta. Made in the USA.

Great Product for Classroom
from Waco, TX
Comments about Original Sculpey:
The white sculpey class pack worked great in my classroom for wire armature clay sculptures. It was versatile and less sticky than the terracotta.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Not What We've Enjoyed in the Past
from Apex, NC
My 6th-grade art students and I love Sculpey as an introduction to ceramics hand building techniques. It doesn't take but a little to demo each technique, and it doesn't dry out so students can "play" after our serious lesson. Then they paint the final pieces and take them home. However, this batch was so disappointing because it became the consistency of marshmellow cream after a few minutes of modeling. Any ideas why or what to do with the rest of it?
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Although polymer clays soften as you work with them, what you're describing sounds extreme, as if the clay is defective. We apologize for this, and one of our Customer Care Representatives will be following up with you so we can send you a replacement.

My kids (10, 9, and 6) use this to make little bowls, animals and Christmas tree ornaments. It doesn't dry out when left out. The whole process (including using the oven) is all within their abilities, so they can create unique gifts on their own and feel the satisfaction of a job well done independently.
Great service...as always!

A versatile medium for any artist
By Mike the Sculptor

I picked up the 24lb box of sculpey. It's the best deal you can get when purchasing sculpey, and it's their standard, basic white sculpey. The very best sculpey is probably the firm, since this normal stuff gets pretty soft in my warm paws, but I do run warmer than a standard human. They don't offer a 24lb of firm, but that's ok. The standard sculpey is fantastic for all sorts of details, easy to sculpt while soft, and easy to carve once baked. You can even sand and dremel it once it's baked. It works well with metal armatures, can be super softened with oils, and once baked can be painted with basically anything without explicitly requiring primer. If you're just starting out I'd recommend this over the small packets of colored clays, it's way more cost effective and you'll force yourself to learn how to paint your sculpts, which ends up looking better anyway. If you're an experienced sculptor you know what you're doing, why are you reading my review? You know what to buy.

I purchased the 8 lb package and when I opened it it was dry, brittle and broke apart easily. I added a couple of drops of Sculpey clay softener to approximately a 2 oz piece and after working it for not even a minute the clay became soft and easy to manipulate. I also blend it with the 2 oz Sculpey III colours when I want colours to gradually tone down. This product is fantastic and is only limited by your imagination.
With so many Sculpey clays available it is hard to know which to choose. This video explains the difference among all the Sculpey "foundation" polymer clays, such as Original Sculpey, Sculpey III, Premo Sculpey, Super Sculpey and Super Sculpey Firm. Learn about the unique attributes of each — so you know exactly which product to select for your next polymer clay project.
