Sharp for paper projects, flimsy for cardboard and thicker
from Plainfield, IL
I used this for my 3D design class where we made books, cardboard sculptures, matboard, bookboard, and worked with thick and thin papers. The snap off blade is very convenient. When the blade becomes dull you have to press pretty hard and in turn, the blade will want to go wherever. When cutting thick cardboard, the blade would actually bend, and I would have to cut the cardboard multiple times, even with a sharp blade. (This was the same case with the bookboard, mattboarf, etc) paired with a metal ruler it makes pretty straight cuts unless your blade is dull.
Excellent blades, poor design, good for its price
from Houston, TX
Olfa is a very solid brand to go with, but I would suggest steering away from this utility knife. Because the blades are of such high quality and so extremely sharp, it is insane to get a utility knife that does not have a locking mechanism. I did not realize this did not lock when I ordered it, so that's my fault. When using it on mat board, the blade pulls out and in while cutting. If you are going to use this on anything with substance (i.e. anything more than one sheet of paper), get one with a locking mechanism to hold the blade in place.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for your feedback! This knife is best suited for light-duty cutting, as the slide mechanism does not lock. However, we do offer several other Olfa knives which do lock, and would be better for your application. We hope you'll be in touch with our Product Information Department for assistance. They can be reached from 8am to 5:30pm CST Monday through Friday at 1-800-933-2542 or firstname.lastname@example.org. They're more than happy to offer a recommendation!
A Knife that Keeps on Cutting
from St. Paul, MN
The Olfa Snap-Off Blade Cutter is a great tool. It comes with 13 blades that are all sharp and ready to use. When the first blade gets dull, you just snap it off, and the next blade is ready to use. The knife also fits nice and firm in the hand, so you can get a comfortable hold on it.
Need a lock
Alvin's cutter has a lock to keep the blade in place. The olfa is a more sturdy model and a very smooth, quality case for the blade.. but there is no lock to keep the blade in place. Particularly when cutting thick foam, pieces of cardboard, etc... the blade easily pulls out from the case instead of pulling out of the material. My high school students always choose my alvin cutters over these.
