Wonderful sharpening tool for charcoal & other drawing media
By J loves art
Comments about Nitram Sharpening Bloc:
Sharpening charcoal especially larger charcoal sticks became much easier with this tool. Jumbo charcoal used to make my sandpaper blocks shift and wiggle when I tried to sharpen it. Even vine charcoal could make it move. This tool is sturdy enough to prevent that. It comes with replacement sanding pads. I love it. Lots of students at the art league school I attend have switched to it after trying fellow students' Nitram sharpening blocs.#sweepstakes

Excellent purchase !
from Long Beach, CA
I use the Nitram Sharpening Bloc to sharpen my charcoal which it does very well ! It is way more efficient than making my own with sandpaper or using the other tiny pre-made ones. I also like the size of the bloc as it smooths out more of the charcoal at one time.

Best sharpener ever!
from Powhatan, VA
This paddle designed sharpener has sand paper on both sides so you can use it for multiple mediums. The grit is extremely coarse so sharpening is quick, almost too quick. Comes with extra pads, but with care they should last you for a very long time.

Same grit size on both sides
from Los Angeles, CA
I use this for sharpening my charcoal pencils to a long, tapered point. Nice, sturdy wooden block/handle. But because the sandpaper on both sides have the same size grit, I need to finish off my sanding on another sanding surface with a finer grit. Before getting this product, I used to use a foot file with a coarser grit on one side, and a finer grit on the other. I bought this product as an 'upgrade' to my drugstore foot file, but it turns out I'm paying more for a fancy wooden handle.

This is a great tool!
from Miami, Fl
When you are doing fine details in charcoal, you need a sharp point. The Sharpening Bloc is the best tool I have found to get the perfect point every time.

Great product; a little pricey
from San Francisco
Ergonomically better than anything else I've tried (including making my own). Still, eleven dollars seems a little high... however, the abrasive feels really durable, and shapes and sharpens graphite an charcoal equally well. If it holds up over time (you do get replacement abrasive, included) it may be worth 11 bucks- time will tell.
