Comments about Michael Harding Mediums and Varnishes:

Got this MH medium 'cause their paint is wonderful. I paint in a thin, layered, realism-based manner, and have been using a medium of oil of spike lavender/stand oil/linseed/walnut oil I concocted myself (3 pts. oil of spike, 1 pt. stand, 1 pt. linseed, 1 pt. walnut). This medium gives a similar gloss and handles much like my own, and dries just a tiny bit slower.

It works fine, no complaints, but I can make my own cheaper; the only downside to the MH medium is a semi-strong smell from the stand oil in it. I'm used to my own medium, which thanks to the oil of spike lavender, smells wonderful:).

Just bought this Michael Harding oil painting medium and found out that it's linseed stand oil and double rectified turpentine. I thought maybe there was a bit more to the composition of this painting medium but that's it. I make this painting medium at home all the time. It does come in a nice glass jar with a black plastic lid that's easy to open/close and seals tight with no leaks. It's a simple medium to use and it does what it's says it does so that part is good but it's also very simple to make at home. Since it's turpentine it has a very strong smell to it. Those people sensitive to it should refrain from purchasing this medium. I have also noticed it's thinned down quite a bit. Stand oil is usually very thick like honey and turpentine is like water. This medium is very watery in consistency. When I make mine at home I use a 2/3 stand oil and 1/3 turpentine so the consistency of mine is much thicker than the Michael Harding medium. If you like a thinner medium which increases gloss and flow then this may be the medium for you. I would recommend this painting medium to a friend who likes a thin turpentine-based oil painting medium.
